Chapter 9 - The Dawn Over the Atlantic

By noon, the Maine coastline was bathed in crisp, golden sunlight. The torrential rain had washed away, leaving the ocean shimmering beneath a pale blue sky, though heavy waves still crashed dramatically against the dark granite cliffs below the Blackwell estate.

Emergency crews had cleared the fallen trees from the main road, and the bridge over the gorge was declared passable.

Outside the grand entrance of the mansion, three black sedans were idling. Marcus was loading Dr. Vance into the back of one, ready for the secure transport to Portland where federal prosecutors were already waiting. The evidence retrieved from Vance’s hard drive had triggered a sweep of arrest warrants across Boston, effectively dismantling the Moretti syndicate overnight.

On the front steps, Ryan was loading suitcases into the back of a luxury SUV. Emily sat in the backseat, glowing with happiness, holding baby Leo securely in a plush car seat.

Amelia stood near her old Honda, which had been washed, detailed, and parked neatly in the driveway by Damon's staff. She was holding her medical bag, looking up at the sprawling cliffside mansion that had felt like a fortress, a prison, and a sanctuary all in the space of thirty-six hours.

"He's healthy, Amelia," Ryan said, walking over to wrap his sister in a massive hug. "Thank you. For everything. For saving my family."

"I'd do it a thousand times over, Ryan," Amelia smiled, hugging him tight. "Take them home. Rest. I’ll come by your place in Portland tomorrow for a proper visit."

"See that you do," Ryan grinned. He looked past her toward the front doors where Damon was walking down the stone steps, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. Ryan gave Damon a respectful nod—the old fear gone, replaced by a deep, quiet understanding between men—before climbing into the SUV and driving down the winding coastal driveway.

Amelia turned to face Damon.

He stopped a few feet from her, the crisp sea breeze tossing his dark hair. Without the adrenaline of the storm and the threat of gunfire, he looked impossibly handsome, commanding, and yet curiously vulnerable.

"Your road is clear, Dr. Brooks," Damon said softly, gesturing toward the open gates. "You are free to go back to your quiet life in Portland."

Amelia looked down at her car keys, then back at Damon. "Just like that? No mob boss threats? No keeping me prisoner?"

A small, genuine smile touched Damon's lips. "I only capture things I intend to keep, Amelia. And I realized last night... you are not someone who can be captured. You have to choose to stay."

Amelia stepped closer to him, the cool breeze blowing her brown hair across her face. "And what if I want to visit?"

Damon’s dark eyes flared with an intense, burning light. "The gates of this estate will always be open to you. The front door will never be locked when you arrive."

May you like

"Good," Amelia said softly. She reached out, placing her hand gently against his lapel, feeling the solid, steady beat of his heart beneath the fine fabric. "Because I think Dr. Vance was wrong about you, Damon. You're not a dead man walking. You're just a man who was waiting for a reason to live for something better."

Damon wrapped his large hand over hers, squeezing gently. "You gave me that reason, Amelia."
