Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

Before Amelia could process Damon’s ominous answer, a heavy thud resonated from downstairs, followed by the sound of heavy boots on stone.

Amelia’s hand instinctively went to her medical bag. Damon didn't flinch, but his entire posture shifted from relaxed host to lethal predator in a fraction of a second. He smoothly stepped in front of Amelia, positioning his body between her and the staircase.

"Stay behind me," he said coldly.

A tall, broad man with rain-soaked silver hair and a blood-stained jacket appeared at the top of the stairs. His face was weathered by decades at sea.

"Amelia!"

"Ryan!" Amelia gasped, pushing past Damon.

It was her brother. He looked battered, drenched to the bone, and exhausted, but he was alive. Ryan threw his arms around Amelia, squeezing her tight before frantically looking down the hall. "Where is she? Is Emily—is the baby—"

"They are both safe," Amelia assured him, holding his shoulders. "You have a son, Ryan. A healthy, perfect baby boy."

Ryan collapsed against the wall, a sob breaking from his throat. He covered his face with his calloused hands. "Thank God... thank God. The boat lost steering off the crags, the radio went dead... I thought I wouldn't make it back."

"Damon’s men picked him up at the marina," the silver-haired man who had brought Ryan up explained softly to Damon. "Brought him straight through the back roads."

Damon nodded once. "Go see your wife, Ryan. She’s sleeping, but she needs you."

Ryan gave Damon a brief, deeply complex look—a mix of gratitude and old, deep-seated fear—before hurrying down the hall into Emily’s room.

Amelia watched her brother go, her doctor's mind suddenly racing. She turned back to Damon. "He risked his life coming through that storm. What did you mean earlier, Damon? Why is Emily—why is my family—safer in your fortress than in a hospital?"

Damon gestured down the grand staircase. "Come downstairs, Dr. Brooks. If you are going to be trapped here until the roads clear, you deserve the truth."

They walked down to a massive library lined with thousands of leather-bound books, a massive stone fireplace crackling with fresh birch wood. Damon poured himself a glass of water and set it on a thick oak desk.

"Three weeks ago, an organization based out of Boston—the Moretti syndicate—began pushing north into Maine," Damon explained, his tone conversational yet lethal. "They want control of the shipping lanes and the private docks my family has managed for seventy years. I told them no."

"And?"

"And they don't take no for an answer. They knew Emily was pregnant. They knew she was my cousin, the last quiet piece of my family that wasn't involved in the business. A week ago, a car followed her from her check-up in Portland. They were planning to take her. To use her as leverage against me."

Amelia felt a chill that had nothing to do with the storm. "So you brought her here."

"I brought her here where I have forty armed men, reinforced steel walls, and full control," Damon said, walking over to stand right in front of her. "I brought in Vance because he was highly recommended. Clearly, his courage didn't match his resume. But I could not risk taking her to a public hospital where a single paid-off orderly could slip something into her IV."

Amelia stared at him, her pulse racing. "You brought my brother's family into a war zone."

"I brought them to the only place on this coast where they would survive," Damon corrected fiercely. "And tonight, I brought you. Which means, Amelia..." He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. "...you are now part of this."

"I am a physician," Amelia said, standing her ground, refusing to back down from his intimidating gaze. "I take care of patients. I am not part of your criminal war."

"You think Moretti cares about your medical license?" Damon asked, a dark, tragic smile touching his lips. "You are Ryan's sister. You just saved the life of the Blackwell heir. To them, you are no longer an innocent bystander. You are a target."

The reality of his words crashed over Amelia like a wave of ice water. She looked at the heavy oak doors, the rain pounding relentless rhythms against the glass.

"The storm has washed out the bridge at the gorge," Damon added softly, his voice dropping into a low, velvet purr. "No one leaves this estate for at least three days. You are safe here, Amelia. But you are not leaving."

"Are you keeping me prisoner?" Amelia demanded, her voice rising.

May you like

"I am keeping you alive," Damon replied smoothly. "There is a difference. Though if you prefer to call it a captivity... feel free to choose whichever room in the east wing pleases you."

Amelia glared at him, furious at his arrogance, yet terrified by the cold logic in his eyes. She was stuck in a storm-locked mansion, surrounded by armed guards, tied to a mob war she never asked for—and trapped with a man whose dangerous aura was becoming dangerously magnetic.
