Chapter 7 - Unmasking the Shadow

Night fell once more over the Maine coast, but the atmosphere inside the Blackwell mansion was stretched taut like a piano wire.

Damon had moved Emily, Ryan, and baby Leo to an inner bedroom deep within the private wing—a room with no exterior windows and reinforced steel doors. Amelia remained with Damon in his private study as he systematically went through encrypted logs, security access cards, and phone records on his desk monitors.

Amelia sat on the leather sofa, watching him work. His dark hair was slightly messy, his tie loosened, the sleeves of his white dress shirt rolled up. Despite the looming threat of betrayal within his inner circle, he maintained an uncanny, mesmerizing composure.

"How do you do it?" Amelia asked softly into the quiet room.

Damon didn't look up from his screen. "Do what?"

"Live like this. Trusting no one, expecting a knife in the back at every turn."

Damon paused, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. He leaned back in his leather chair and looked across the room at her. "I trust a few people. Marcus. Emily. And now... you."

"You barely know me," Amelia pointed out.

"I know you risked your life driving through a category two storm to save a woman you love," Damon said smoothly. "I know you stood in a pitch-black room with a dying infant and didn't flinch. Character isn't revealed in decades of peace, Amelia. It's revealed in ten seconds of panic."

Amelia felt a warm flutter in her chest. She stood up and walked over to his desk, leaning her hands against the polished dark wood. "Did you find who betrayed you?"

Damon turned one of the monitors toward her. "The access codes used to bypass the outer fence belonged to the medical contractor firm I hired to supply Dr. Vance."

Amelia frowned. "Dr. Vance? But he’s gone. You fired him last night."

"I fired Vance," Damon said, his eyes narrowing into slits of dark ice. "But Vance didn't leave the grounds immediately. My guards escorted him to the lower guest house near the gate to wait for the storm roads to clear. He had access to the internal network through his medical iPad."

Suddenly, the security panel on Damon's desk flashed bright red. A silent alarm triggered on the secondary server room located in the mansion's basement.

Damon pulled a sleek silver hand-gun from his desk drawer, checking the magazine with a practiced, fluid motion.

"Stay here," Damon ordered, standing up.

"Not a chance," Amelia said instantly. "If Vance is doing something down there, he might be tampering with medical oxygen lines or backup power feeds that Emily needs. I know the medical equipment better than you do."

Damon stared at her for a long second, evaluating her determination. A faint, admiring grin touched his lips. "You are terribly disobedient, Dr. Brooks."

"I've been told," Amelia replied calmly.

"Fine. Keep close, and if I tell you to get down, you drop to the floor."

They glided quietly down the narrow stone stairs leading to the sub-basement. The air grew cool and damp, smelling of old granite and electrical ozone. The basement housed the mansion’s primary server racks, main power junction, and medical oxygen storage.

As they reached the bottom landing, Amelia saw a faint glow of light coming from the server room.

Through the glass panel of the door, Dr. Vance was frantically plugging an external hard drive into the main terminal, downloading encryption keys while speaking hushed, panicked words into a satellite phone.

"...I gave you the gate codes!" Vance was whispering furiously into the phone. "Your hit team failed! Blackwell is going to kill me if he finds out—you need to send a boat to the cliff landing right now!"

Damon didn't waste time with grand entrances. He kicked the server room door open with a thunderous crack.

May you like

Vance shrieked, dropping the satellite phone. He spun around, his face turning paper-white as he stared down the barrel of Damon’s gun.

"Dr. Vance," Damon said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I believe your contract expired last night."
