Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Cliffside

Amelia didn't argue. The raw, absolute authority in Damon's voice spurred her into immediate action.

She raced up the stairs, barging into Emily’s room. Ryan was already on his feet, having heard the tension echoing through the halls.

"What's happening?" Ryan demanded.

"Someone’s at the north gate. Damon said to get to the panic room in the library," Amelia said quickly, lifting baby Leo from his crib and wrapping him tightly in a blanket. "Emily, can you walk?"

"I think so," Emily said, her face pale with renewed fear. Ryan immediately gathered his wife into his arms, supporting her weight.

They moved quickly down the back service corridor, descending into the main library just as the heavy, muted sound of gunfire echoed from the northern courtyard outside.

Pop-pop-pop!

The sound was muffled by the thick stone walls and hurricane glass, but the reality was unmistakable. A battle was taking place right outside.

Damon was standing by a massive bookcase at the far end of the library. He had swapped his sweater for a heavy tactical jacket and held a sleek black rifle in his hands. He pressed a hidden panel behind a row of leather-bound encyclopedias. A heavy steel door slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss, revealing a brightly lit, self-contained bunker stocked with medical supplies, monitors, and food.

"In. All of you," Damon ordered.

Ryan carried Emily inside, laying her on a cot. Amelia stepped to the threshold, but paused, looking back at Damon.

"You're going out there?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"It’s my house, Amelia," Damon said grimly. "Moretti’s men think the storm gives them cover. They don't realize I built this place specifically for this scenario."

"You could get killed!"

Damon met her eyes. For a split second, the cold mob boss facade cracked, revealing a deep, fierce heat beneath. "They won't get through these doors. I promise you that. Get inside."

"Damon—"

Before she could finish, he hit the close button on the outer wall. The heavy steel door slid shut, locking with a series of heavy mechanical thuds.

Inside the panic room, the sound of the storm and the gunfire was entirely cut off. High-definition security screens mounted on the wall flickered to life, showing live feeds of the estate's exterior.

Amelia rushed to the monitors, her stomach churning as she watched the conflict unfold in real-time.

Rain lashed against three black SUVs parked near the ruined wooden gate. Men in dark tactical gear were advancing toward the mansion’s side entrance, firing automatic weapons. But Damon’s guards were disciplined, moving with military precision, taking cover behind concrete balustrades and heavy stone pillars.

Then Amelia saw Damon on the screen.

He moved with chilling efficiency. He wasn't firing wildly; he was directing his security team, advancing calmly through the storm, cutting off the flank of the intruders. Within minutes, the superior positioning of the Blackwell forces overwhelmed the attackers. Two of the SUVs turned and sped away into the blinding rain, abandoning the remaining men who surrendered, dropping their weapons onto the mud.

Amelia leaned against the monitor control desk, letting out a breath she felt she had been holding for an eternity.

"He’s incredible, isn't he?" Emily’s voice came softly from the cot. She was holding baby Leo against her chest.

Amelia turned to her sister-in-law. "He’s a dangerous man, Emily."

"He is," Emily agreed quietly. "To his enemies. But to the people he protects? There is no one safer to be around. When my father died, Damon paid off all his debts, put me through college, and bought us our home. He never asked for anything in return. He carries the weight of a world he didn't choose, Amelia."

Amelia looked back at the monitor. Damon was standing in the pouring rain, his face wet, his eyes staring directly into one of the security cameras. It felt as though he was looking right at her through the screen.

Ten minutes later, the steel door of the panic room hissed open.

Damon stood in the doorway. His coat was soaked, and a thin streak of blood trickled down his cheekbone from a small graze, but his posture was unbroken.

"It’s over," Damon announced calmly. "The perimeter is secure."

Ryan let out a heavy sigh of relief, sinking into a chair.

Amelia immediately stepped forward, grabbing a sterile gauze pad and antiseptic from the bunker’s medical cabinet. She walked straight up to Damon.

"You're bleeding," she said, her tone stern to cover the sudden tremor in her hands.

Damon looked down at her, a faint, amused tilt at the corner of his mouth. "It's just a graze."

May you like

"Sit down, Blackwell," Amelia commanded, gesturing to a steel bench outside the bunker entrance. "Or do I need to call two of your guards to make you?"

Damon chuckled softly—a rare, deep sound that sent warmth blooming through Amelia’s chest. "I wouldn't dare disobey my doctor."
