Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

"Blackwell—please!" Vance stammered, backing up against the humming server racks, raising his trembling hands. "They threatened my family! Moretti... they said they would ruin me, revoke my license, hurt my daughters if I didn't give them access!"

Damon stepped into the room, his weapon held steady, zero hesitation in his posture. "You endangered a mother and a newborn child for your own skin. You delayed Emily's care hoping she would suffer complications, giving Moretti an opening to strike while we were distracted."

Amelia felt a wave of profound disgust wash over her. "You broke your oath, Vance. You used medicine as a weapon."

"Amelia, you don't understand how powerful Moretti is!" Vance pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "They own half the judges in Boston! Damon Blackwell is a dead man walking! If you stay with him, you'll die too!"

"That's enough," Damon said coldly. He shifted his grip on the weapon.

"Damon, wait," Amelia said quickly, placing a gentle hand on Damon's arm.

Damon didn't lower the gun, but he paused, glancing sideways at her. "He tried to murder my family, Amelia."

"If you shoot him here, cold-blooded, you prove everything he says about you," Amelia said softly, her eyes locked on Damon's face. "Don't let him turn you into the monster he wants you to be. Hand him over to the federal authorities. With the data on that hard drive, you can destroy Moretti legally without pulling a single trigger."

Damon stared at her. The silence in the basement was suffocating, punctuated only by the hum of the servers and Vance's frantic breathing.

For a long, terrifying moment, Amelia didn't know which way the scales would tip. Damon Blackwell was a man who ruled by fear and absolute force. Mercy was not a currency his world traded in.

Slowly, agonizingly, Damon lowered the barrel of the gun.

"Marcus," Damon called out without turning around.

Marcus stepped into the doorway, heavy zip-ties in hand.

"Secure him," Damon ordered smoothly. "Strip him of all devices. Hand him and that hard drive directly to our contact at the FBI regional office in Portland the second the roads open. Tell them Dr. Vance is offering full testimony against the Moretti family in exchange for protective custody."

Vance slumped to the floor in tears, relief and humiliation washing over him as Marcus roughly bound his wrists.

Damon turned to Amelia. The icy rage in his eyes had melted, replaced by a profound, searching intensity. "You just saved his life, Amelia. And perhaps... saved mine from a line I didn't need to cross tonight."

"I saved your future," Amelia corrected softly. "You have a nephew upstairs who needs an uncle who is alive, free, and worthy of his respect."

Damon looked at her for a long time, the shadows of the basement catching the sharp, handsome angles of his face. Slowly, he reached out, his long fingers gently cupping the back of her neck, pulling her a fraction closer.

"You are extraordinary, Amelia Brooks," he murmured, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone.

Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. She didn't pull away. "Damon..."

May you like

Before the moment could break, the emergency lighting in the corridor shifted from amber to clear white. High above, the low, dull roar of the storm began to fade, replaced by the pale blue light of dawn breaking through the basement high-windows.

The storm was finally over.
