Chapter 15 - Shadows in the Garden

We returned to the DeLuca estate late that evening. The summer air was warm and sweet, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard gardens.
Grace was upstairs studying for her graduate exams, while Uncle Mario and Leo were downstairs in the kitchen arguing good-naturedly over a pot of homemade marinara sauce. Upstairs in the nursery, little Leo was fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm.
I sat out on the back patio with a glass of herbal tea, watching the moonlight ripple across the calm waters of the Chicago River bordering our property.
Footsteps echoed softly on the flagstones, and a warm, familiar wool jacket settled over my shoulders. Damian pulled up a chair beside mine, sitting down and taking my hand.
"Harrison folded within two hours of our meeting," Damian said softly, a quiet victory in his tone. "Julian received formal notice of withdrawal from Vanguard's counsel fifteen minutes ago. The lawsuit is dead, Natalie. Madison has been stripped of her position at the firm, and her backers have cut ties."
I let out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I'd been holding since I opened that blue folder in the study. I leaned my head against Damian’s shoulder, closing my eyes.
"Do you think she'll ever find peace, Damian?" I murmured. "Or is she doomed to repeat the same mistakes her parents made?"
"Some people choose their chains, my queen," Damian answered gently, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me close against his chest. "We can't carry the weight of everyone else's bitterness. We can only protect what we've built."
Suddenly, a sharp rustling sound echoed from the edge of the dark garden near the riverbank.
Damian’s body went instantly rigid. His reflexes, honed by years at the top of the underworld and corporate warfare, were instantaneous. He shifted me behind him, his right hand slipping inside his jacket toward his concealed firearm holster, his eyes piercing the heavy shadows beneath the willow trees.
"Who's there?" Damian called out, his voice sharp and lethal.
For a moment, there was only the sound of the wind through the river reeds. Then, a figure stepped out from the darkness into the soft glow of the patio lantern.
It was Madison.
She looked entirely different from the fierce corporate shark we had faced across the conference table hours earlier. Her hair was disheveled, her pantsuit wrinkled, and her eyes hollow, ringed with dark bruises of exhaustion and defeat. She wasn't holding a briefcase or a legal file. Her hands were empty, trembling at her sides.
"Madison," I whispered, stepping out from behind Damian, though he remained close, his hand still ready. "What are you doing here?"
Madison stared at me, her chest heaving, tears finally spilling over her lashes.
"I lost my job," she choked out, her voice cracking violently. "Vanguard fired me the moment Harrison received your legal notice. They locked my desk, threw my things in a cardboard box, and told me I was a liability."
"You brought this on yourself, Madison," I said, my voice firm but devoid of malice. "You tried to destroy a sanctuary for children just to settle an old grudge."
"I had nothing left!" she cried, her voice rising in desperate anguish. "Dad is rotting in a federal prison, Mom is working in a retail outlet in LA and won't even take my calls, and I... I was trying to prove I wasn't a failure! I thought if I won, if I took everything from you, I'd finally matter!"
She dropped to her knees on the grass, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with ragged, broken sobs.
I stood frozen for a moment. All the anger, all the resentment I had carried for years, suddenly felt heavy and useless. I looked at my younger sister—broken, defeated, and utterly alone in the world she had tried to manipulate.

I looked at Damian. He met my eyes, reading the silent question in my mind, and gave a slow, solemn nod of unspoken permission.
I walked across the flagstones, knelt down on the damp grass beside my sister, and gently placed a hand on her shaking shoulder.
