Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

The disappearance of the Moretti family from the Chicago underworld was swift, absolute, and executed with terrifying precision.
By Friday afternoon, news outlets were reporting a sudden "corporate restructuring" and the mysterious exit of several high-ranking executives associated with Moretti Logistics. No blood was spilled on the streets, no police sirens blared through Lincoln Park, and no press conferences were held.
In Damian’s world, power did not scream; it erased.
Inside the DeLuca estate, however, a new reality had taken root.
The subtle boundaries between Natalie, Damian, and Ava had dissolved. Natalie no longer returned to her small apartment in the evenings; Damian had quietly instructed Mrs. Gable to relocate Natalie's belongings into a luxurious private suite directly adjoining his own master bedrooms on the third floor.
Grace, Natalie’s younger sister, had been provided with a secure, high-end apartment near her university, complete with a private security detail that followed her at a discreet distance.
"Is this real?" Grace had asked Natalie over an encrypted video call one evening, her eyes wide as she looked at her fully furnished apartment. "Nat, who is this guy? People at school say the DeLuca family owns half of Illinois."
"He's a good man, Grace," Natalie had answered gently, standing by the window of her new suite. "He's protective. He takes care of the people he loves."
"Are you in love with him?" Grace asked softly.
Natalie looked at her reflection in the glass, touching her lips where Damian’s kiss had lingered just hours before. "Yes. God help me, Grace, I think I am."
Yet, love in a mafia estate was never simple.
While Ava thrived under Natalie’s care—speaking in full sentences, mastering her sensory integration tools, and smiling more in a month than she had in her entire life—the dark machinery of Damian’s syndicate was constantly humming in the background.
It came to a head on a crisp Saturday afternoon in December.
Damian was hosting a private gathering of his senior captains and business partners in the grand dining room downstairs. Men in tailored Italian suits, carrying leather briefcases, filled the marble foyer, their eyes sharp, guarded, and cold.
Natalie was in the conservatory with Ava, building a complex wooden castle, when Mrs. Gable entered the room.
"Miss Carter," Mrs. Gable said, her tone polite, though her rigid posture remained intact. "Mr. DeLuca requests your presence in the dining room."
Natalie frowned gently, laying down a wooden block. "In the dining room? During his business meeting?"
"He was quite specific," Mrs. Gable replied. "He wishes for you to meet his inner circle."
Natalie took Ava’s hand, smoothed down her dark green wool dress, and walked down the grand staircase.
The dining room was thick with the scent of costly cigars, aged whiskey, and heavy leather. Twelve men sat around the massive mahogany table, their conversations halting instantly the moment Natalie and Ava stepped through the doors.
At the head of the table sat Damian.
He looked immaculate in a dark three-piece charcoal suit, a glass of crystal amber liquor in his hand. When his eyes met Natalie's, the coldness in his face instantly vanished, replaced by a warm, possessive glow.
"Gentlemen," Damian said, his deep voice commanding the room effortlessly. "Stand."
Every single man around the table stood up instantly, their chairs scraping against the hardwood floor.
Damian stood up and walked toward Natalie, taking her hand gently in his and pulling her to his side. He lifted Ava into his other arm, holding his daughter against his chest.
"This is Natalie Carter," Damian announced to his syndicate captains, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a decree. "She is the head of my household, the guardian of my daughter, and the woman at my side. An insult to her is an insult to me. A threat to her is a declaration of war against the entire DeLuca family."
Natalie felt her heart leap into her throat. She looked at the hardened faces of the syndicate bosses. Some looked surprised; others, like Leo, nodded with quiet respect.
One older man with slicked-back grey hair and a scar across his nose—Uncle Mario, Damian's late father's consigliere—stepped forward, bowing his head slightly toward Natalie.
"Welcome to the family, Miss Carter," Mario said, his voice raspy with age and smoke. "A house without a queen is just a fortress. You have brought life back to this bloodline."
Damian looked down at Natalie, his thumb stroking the back of her hand, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding promise.
