Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

With winter settling heavily over the city, the bond between Natalie, Damian, and Ava grew unbreakable.
They spent evenings together in the private family wing—away from guards, syndicate business, and political maneuvering. Damian learned how to sit on the plush rug, building lego towers with Ava while Natalie read beside the fire. For the first time in his life, the feared mob boss found peace within his own walls.
However, peace in the underworld was always a fragile illusion.
In mid-January, a ghost from the past emerged to threaten the sanctuary Damian had built.
Natalie was sitting in Damian’s study, reviewing educational progress reports for Ava, when Leo brought a thick grey folder into the room. Damian was at a meeting in the city, leaving Natalie as the temporary point of contact for non-emergency house matters.
"Miss Carter," Leo said, his face unusually grim. "You need to see this before the boss gets back."
Natalie set her pen down, opening the folder. "What is it, Leo?"
Inside were photographs of an attractive, sharp-featured woman in her late thirties, dressed in high-end designer clothing, stepping off a private jet at O'Hare International Airport.
"Who is she?" Natalie asked.
"Victoria Vance," Leo answered, leaning against the desk. "She is the maternal aunt of Ava. The sister of Damian’s late wife, Elena."
Natalie felt a cold knot form in her stomach. "I didn't know Elena had family."
"Elena's family is old money from New York," Leo explained, his tone laced with deep distaste. "They cut ties with Elena when she married Damian ten years ago. They called him a thug, a criminal, a brute. When Elena died during childbirth, they tried to take Ava from Damian through the federal courts."
"Why didn't they?"
"Because Damian presented evidence that Victoria Vance was using trust fund capital to finance an illegal gambling ring in Manhattan," Leo replied with a dark grin. "They backed off. But now... Victoria has returned to Chicago. And she’s filed a petition with the Cook County Family Court for emergency custody of Ava."
Natalie’s blood turned to ice. "On what grounds?"
"On the grounds that Damian is an unfit parent whose lifestyle endangers the child," Leo said. "She’s citing the incident from two months ago when Moretti's men breached the perimeter."
Before Natalie could process the information, the heavy doors of the study flew open.
Damian walked into the room, his long dark overcoat blowing behind him, his face a terrifying mask of fury. He held a formal legal summons in his hand, crumpled into a tight ball.
"Leo," Damian barked, his voice vibrating with lethal intent. "Tell me you have her hotel location."
"I do, boss," Leo replied instantly.
"Damian, wait," Natalie said, standing up from the desk and rushing around to block his path.
Damian stopped, his dark eyes flashing with wild rage. "She is trying to take my daughter, Natalie! She wants to drag Ava into a public courtroom, put her through sensory hell, and lock her away in an institution in New York just to strip my estate's trust fund!"
"I know," Natalie said gently, placing both of her hands on his broad, tense chest, feeling the violent thrum of his pulse beneath his wool coat. "I know, my love. But if you attack her, if you use violence against her right now, you give her lawyers exactly what they want. You prove her point to the judge."
Damian stared down at her, his jaw clenching, his breathing heavy and jagged. "I will not let them touch Ava."
"They won't," Natalie declared, her dark eyes flashing with a sharp, protective fierce brilliance he had never seen in her before. "You fight them in the streets with guns, Damian. But in court? In protecting a child’s rights? That is my battlefield. Let me handle Victoria Vance."
Damian looked at her, the wild fury in his eyes slowly transforming into awe. He reached up, cupping her face in his large, scarred hands, pressing his forehead against hers.

"You are relentless, Natalie Carter," Damian whispered softly.
"I learned from the best," she replied, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "Now, let’s go destroy her legally."
