Chapter 9 - The Vows of Silk and Iron

The wedding of Damian DeLuca and Natalie Carter was spoken of in the halls of Chicago power for generations.
It took place on a crisp, golden afternoon in late September at the DeLuca estate’s private botanical gardens. The security perimeter stretched for three blocks in every direction, managed by a joint force of DeLuca security guards, off-duty police officers, and private federal contractors.
Yet inside the garden walls, there was no sign of danger.
Thousands of white peonies, orchids, and blue hydrangeas lined a long glass aisle built directly over a tranquil reflecting pool.
Sitting in the audience were two hundred guests—a unique blend of high-society figures, charitable foundation leaders, Grace and her university friends, and hardened syndicate captains dressed in immaculate tuxedos, all sitting side by side in respectful silence.
At the altar stood Damian.
He looked devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his eyes fixed unblinkingly on the end of the aisle. Beside him stood Leo as his best man, looking sharp and proud.
Then the music shifted—a gentle, acoustic harp melody that was soft, quiet, and carefully designed to keep Ava comfortable.
Ava walked down the aisle first as the flower girl. She wore a miniature white lace dress, carrying a small silver basket of rose petals, walking slowly and proudly, dropping petals one by one, completely calm and happy.
And then came Natalie.
The entire audience gasped.
She was breathtaking. She wore a custom silk-and-lace gown that trailed behind her like a river of white foam, her dark hair styled in an intricate crown of braids woven with tiny pearl pins. She carried a simple bouquet of white peonies.
As her dark eyes met Damian’s, the rest of the world vanished.
Damian watched her approach, his chest rising and falling heavily, a single tear escaping his eye and trailing down his scarred jaw—a sight that no man in his syndicate had ever witnessed in his entire forty years of life.
When her father’s surrogate—Uncle Mario—handed Natalie's hand to Damian at the altar, Damian took it as if it were the most precious treasure in the universe.
"You look like an angel," Damian whispered softly, his voice thick with emotion.
"And you look like my king," Natalie replied, her radiant smile lighting up the entire garden.
The priest began the ceremony, his words echoing softly across the water.
When it came time for the vows, Damian took both of Natalie’s hands in his, speaking without looking at his written paper, his eyes locked onto hers with absolute, terrifying devotion.
"Natalie," Damian said, his deep voice carrying clearly over the gentle breeze. "I spent my entire life building walls. I built an empire of stone, steel, and shadow because I believed that love was a weakness that destroyed men. Then you walked into my world. You didn't break my walls; you opened the doors and brought light into the dark."
He squeezed her hands gently.
"I vow to love you, to honor you, and to protect you with every breath in my body. I vow that as long as I live, no shadow will ever touch you or our daughter. You are my sanctuary, my home, and my heart."
Tears streamed down Natalie’s cheeks as she smiled through her joy.
"Damian," Natalie spoke, her voice clear, strong, and brimming with love. "I didn't fall in love with a mafia boss. I fell in love with a father who loved his daughter enough to move mountains. I fell in love with a man whose heart is bigger and fiercer than anyone in this city knows."
She stepped closer to him, resting her hands against his broad chest.
"I vow to stand beside you in every battle, to love you in every silence, and to build a home with you where fear has no power. You are my protector, my best friend, and my soul."
"By the power vested in me," the priest declared, a warm smile on his face, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
Damian didn't wait a single second.

He pulled Natalie into his arms, dipping her back gracefully over his knee, and kissed her with a fierce, burning passion that brought the entire audience—syndicate bosses, judges, family, and guards—to their feet in a thunderous, cheering standing ovation.
Ava ran up to the altar, jumping up and down, clapping her hands happily as her father lifted her new mother up in his arms, turning her around in the bright autumn sunshine.
