Chapter 4 - The Debt of Blood

By 3:00 AM, the DeLuca estate had been transformed into a silent, efficient cleaning operation.

The two bodies had been removed through the service entrance in heavy black bags. The blood-soaked rug was cut away and burned, the broken door replaced by a team of silent carpenters, and the walls scrubbed clean until not a single trace of the violence remained.

Natalie sat on a plush velvet sofa in Damian's primary living room downstairs, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket. A nurse employed by the DeLuca family had just finished wrapping her shoulder, which was heavily bruised from her fall.

Ava was sleeping peacefully upstairs in Damian’s master suite, guarded by four men with automatic rifles stationed outside the door.

The heavy mahogany doors of the living room opened, and Damian walked in.

He had showered and changed into a clean black sweater and trousers. His damp dark hair was brushed back, but the exhaustion carved into his face was deeper than ever. He carried a silver tray with a porcelain teapot and two cups.

He set the tray on the low glass table before her, poured a cup of hot dark tea, and handed it to Natalie.

"Peppermint," Damian said softly, taking a seat beside her on the sofa. "Mrs. Gable said it helps with shock."

Natalie took the warm cup, her fingers brushing against his. The simple contact sent a soothing warmth through her frayed nerves. "Thank you."

Damian leaned back, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace. "The men who broke in tonight were mercenaries hired by Lorenzo Moretti."

Natalie took a slow sip of the tea. She had heard the name Moretti on the news—a rival syndicate that controlled the illegal gambling and narcotics trade on Chicago's West Side.

"Why?" Natalie asked softly. "Why would they target a child?"

"Because Lorenzo is dying of cancer," Damian said, his voice flat and bitter. "He knows his empire is collapsing, and he wanted to force me into a land concession along the riverfront before he dies. He thought taking Ava would render me helpless."

He turned his head to look at her. The dark fire in his eyes had settled into something profound and terrifyingly intense.

"He didn't account for you, Natalie."

Natalie looked down at her hands resting on the cashmere blanket. "I just did what any decent person would do."

"No," Damian interrupted, leaning closer, his voice dropping into a rich, dark velvet. "A decent person would have bargained. A decent person would have panicked. You stood in front of a gun, took a blow from a man twice your size, and lied to protect a child that isn't yours."

He reached out, his large, warm hand cupping the back of her neck, his thumb resting gently against her jawline. The intensity of his gaze made her breath hitch in her throat.

"You took a debt of blood for my family tonight, Natalie," Damian murmured, his dark eyes searching hers. "In my world, a debt of blood is never forgotten. You and your sister will never want for anything again. Your mother’s remaining medical debts were paid off two hours ago. Grace’s tuition for four years has been placed in an irrevocable trust."

Natalie’s eyes widened. "Damian, no... that's too much—"

"It is nowhere near enough," Damian cut her off, his fingers tightening gently against her neck, pulling her a fraction of an inch closer. "You protected what is most precious to me. There is no price tag in existence that covers that."

They were so close now that Natalie could feel the warmth of his breath against her lips. The danger, the blood, the chaotic night seemed to shrink away, leaving only the magnetic, undeniable gravitational pull between them.

"Damian..." she whispered, her heart fluttering violently against her ribs.

"Tell me to stop, Natalie," Damian rasped, his eyes dropping to her mouth. "Tell me to walk away and maintain the professional boundary. Tell me right now, because if you don't..."

Natalie didn't tell him to stop.

Instead, she leaned forward, closing the microscopic gap between them, and pressed her lips against his.

The kiss was explosive.

Damian let out a low, guttural growl, his arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her firmly into his lap. The restraint he had maintained for weeks shattered completely. His lips were hungry, possessive, yet fiercely protective, tasting of peppermint and dark fire.

Natalie wrapped her good arm around his neck, sinking into his heat, tangling her fingers in his damp hair as the reality of who he was melted into the overwhelming truth of how deeply she had fallen for him.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

"You have no idea what you're stepping into, Natalie," Damian whispered, his dark eyes brimming with a fiercely protective passion. "My life is a war zone."

"Then let me be your sanctuary," Natalie replied softly, her hand resting over his heart.

Damian smiled—a real, breathtaking smile that transformed his harsh features into something agonizingly handsome. He kissed her cheek softly, then pulled her head down to rest against his chest.

"Leo," Damian called out toward the shadow near the door without looking up.

Leo stepped out from the darkness, his hands folded neatly in front of him. "Yes, boss?"

"Send word to the captains," Damian said, his voice turning to pure ice as his hand stroked Natalie's hair. "The Moretti family ceases to exist by sunrise."

"Consider it done, boss," Leo replied, bowing his head and vanishing back into the night.

Natalie closed her eyes, listening to the steady, heavy thud of Damian's heart beneath her ear, knowing that her life had irrevocably crossed the line into a world of shadow, blood, and an unyielding, unbreakable love.
