Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at the Estate

Back at the grand Vance Estate, the atmosphere inside the dining room remained insufferable and arrogant. Eleanor Vance poured another glass of vintage Pinot Noir into her lead-crystal goblet, casually adjusting her silk scarf. Across the table, her daughter Natalie was scrolling through her phone, admiring photos of luxury designer bags she planned to purchase once the house transfer was officially registered.
"She’ll be back begging within an hour," Eleanor remarked dismissively, taking a slow sip. "That little pauper has nowhere else to go. Her family has nothing, and without Ethan’s military paycheck, she’s completely destitute."
"I still can’t believe Ethan showed up tonight," Natalie muttered, a tinge of nervousness creeping back into her voice. "Did you see the look in his eyes, Mother? He looked... terrifying."
"Ethan is a soldier; he obeys protocol," Eleanor snapped, waving her hand dismissively. "Once I explain to him how disrespectful and mentally unstable Claire has been over the last two years, he will fall in line. I am his mother. He knows his duty to this family."
Suddenly, the front driveway echoed with the roar of multiple engines. Glancing out the window, Natalie froze. Three police cruisers with flashing emergency lights pulled up behind Ethan’s parked truck, followed closely by a sleek black sedan.
"Mother..." Natalie stammered, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "The police are here!"
Eleanor frowned, placing her glass down with annoyance. "Ridiculous. Ethan is making a scene over nothing. Let me handle this."
Before Eleanor could reach the grand entrance, the heavy oak front doors swung open. Officer Vance stepped inside, flanked by two armed patrol officers and David Sloan, the tall, sharp-eyed family attorney carrying a leather briefcase.
"Eleanor Vance? Natalie Vance?" Officer Vance announced loudly, his voice echoing through the high-ceilinged foyer.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Eleanor demanded, pulling herself up to her full height with practiced aristocratic arrogance. "This is private property! David, why are you here with the police at this hour? Tell these officers to leave immediately!"
David Sloan stepped forward, unbuttoning his overcoat. His face was devoid of warmth. "Eleanor, I am not here as your legal counsel. I am here as the legal executor of the late Arthur Vance’s estate and the personal representative of Captain Ethan Vance and Claire Vance."
"Nonsense!" Eleanor scoffed. "Arthur’s estate belongs to his widow and his daughter! Ethan is away serving, and his wife is currently undergoing a severe hysterical episode outside."
"Claire is currently in the ICU suffering from severe hypothermia, physical trauma, and internal bruising," Officer Vance cut in sharply. "And according to external video footage we have already secured from your home’s security network, she did not 'run outside.' You and your daughter forcibly dragged her out the back entry and locked the storm doors behind her."
Natalie’s face went dead white. "Video footage? What video footage? There are no cameras here!"
"Your late husband installed a state-of-the-art security grid throughout the estate two months before his death, Eleanor," David Sloan revealed coolly. "He kept the system hidden specifically because he suspected you and Natalie were mismanaging funds and abusing his trust."
Eleanor stumbled back a step, clutching the back of a sofa. "That... that’s impossible! Arthur would never hide something like that from me!"
"He knew you better than you think," David said, reaching into his briefcase and producing a heavy stack of legal documents. "Furthermore, you have continually claimed ownership of this house. Let me clarify your legal standing once and for all."
David opened the folder, holding up a certified document bearing the official seal of the State Supreme Court.
"Two weeks before his passing, Arthur Vance transferred this entire property, including the main house, the 200 acres of surrounding land, all liquid accounts, and the family art collection into an irrevocable living trust. Claire Vance is designated as the sole protected beneficiary. Ethan Vance is the sole managing trustee. You and Natalie have no ownership rights, no legal tenancy, and no authority over a single dollar of this estate."
"No!" Natalie shrieked, her voice echoing in panic. "That’s a lie! Mother said this house belonged to us! We were going to sell the eastern parcel next month!"
"If you attempt to sell or clear anything, you will be committing federal fraud," David replied coldly.
Officer Vance stepped forward, pulling two pairs of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Eleanor Vance, Natalie Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault, reckless endangerment, and unlawful imprisonment. You have the right to remain silent..."

"Get your hands off me!" Eleanor screamed as the metal cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "Ethan! Where is Ethan?! He won't allow you to do this to his mother!"
"Ethan is the one who pressed the charges, Mrs. Vance," Officer Vance stated plainly, leading the two hysterical women out the front door into the freezing night—the exact cold they had condemned Claire to endure just hours before.
