Chapter 3 - The Shadows of the Past

By 4:00 AM, the quiet hum of the ICU heart monitors was the only sound in Claire’s private room. Ethan sat in a chair pulled close to her bedside, holding her left hand between both of his broad palms, gently breathing warmth onto her cold fingers. The color was slowly returning to her face, though dark shadow-like bruises remained prominent on her wrists and near her hairline.

The door softly clicked open, and David Sloan stepped inside, holding a hot cup of coffee which he offered to Ethan.

"How is she?" David asked in a quiet tone.

"Her core temperature is back to normal, but the doctors said she suffered a mild concussion and extreme systemic stress," Ethan murmured, his gaze never leaving Claire's sleeping face. "Thank you for coming so quickly, David. I couldn't have done this without you."

"Your father foresaw this, Ethan," David said softly, sitting on the small window bench. "Arthur knew that once he was gone, Eleanor and Natalie would try to strip Claire of everything and force her out. He saw how they treated her when you were deployed on your first tour. That’s why he created the trust."

Ethan looked up, his eyes filled with pain. "Why didn’t Claire ever tell me in her letters? Every single letter she sent me over the last two years was full of love, pictures of the garden, and reassurance that everything was fine."

"Because she was trying to protect you," David explained, pulling a thick envelope from his inner jacket pocket. "Claire came to my office six months ago. She was bruised then, too, Ethan. She begged me not to tell you because she knew you were in an active combat zone and didn't want you distracted or put in danger."

Ethan felt a sharp ache in his chest. "She was enduring hell to keep me safe..."

"Eleanor cut off her access to the household accounts almost immediately after you left," David continued, his tone solemn. "They forced her to do all the manual upkeep of the estate, locked her out of the main quarters, and threatened that if she complained, they would use their legal influence to dishonorably discharge you or keep you overseas indefinitely. They fed her lies, Ethan."

Ethan’s grip on Claire’s hand tightened gently. "They stole two years of her life. They treated her like a prisoner in my own home."

Suddenly, Claire moved slightly under the blankets. A soft groan escaped her lips, and her eyelashes fluttered. Ethan instantly stood up, leaning over her.

"Claire? Sweetheart, can you hear me?"

Her eyes opened slowly, cloudy and disoriented at first, reflecting the warm glow of the room’s nightlight. She blinked several times, trying to focus on the figure standing above her. When her eyes finally met Ethan’s face—his uniform, his warm eyes, the small scar on his chin—she froze.

"Ethan...?" she whispered, her voice barely audible, raspy from the cold air she had inhaled. "Is... is it really you? Am I dreaming?"

"It’s me, baby. It’s Ethan," he said, tears brimming in his eyes as he gently cupped her cheek. "You're safe. I'm home. I'm never leaving again."

Tears spilled instantly from the corners of Claire's eyes, sliding down into her hair. She tried to lift her arm to touch his face, but winced in pain. Ethan caught her hand softly, pressing a deep kiss into her palm.

"Don't try to move, my love. You're in the hospital. Everything is taken care of."

"Your mother... Natalie..." Claire whispered, terror flashing in her eyes as memory flooded back. "They took your father's papers... they told me if I didn't sign the transfer tonight, they would make sure you never came back..."

"Shh," Ethan soothed, kissing her forehead. "They will never touch you again. The police took them away tonight. They are in jail, Claire. They are never coming back to that house."

Claire looked at him, her chest heaving as the weight of two years of fear and isolation began to wash away. She buried her face into Ethan’s chest, weeping openly as his arms held her tight against the cold world outside.
