Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Empire

With Eleanor and Natalie safely behind bars, Ethan focused his energy on reclaiming his home and clearing away the dark shadows that had hung over Claire for two long years.
Three days after her admission, Claire was officially discharged from the hospital. Her physical bruises were beginning to fade into light yellow marks, though the emotional recovery would take time. Ethan drove her back to the Vance Estate—not to stay, but to oversee a complete sweeping transformation of the house.
As the heavy wooden doors opened, Claire hesitated on the threshold, her breathing catching in her throat. The memory of being dragged through the hall was still fresh. Ethan immediately took her hand, stepping in front of her.
"You don't have to walk in there alone ever again," Ethan said softly. "And nothing in this house stays unless you want it to."
Waiting inside were David Sloan and a team of professional private investigators and forensic accountants. Over the past seventy-two hours, David had exercised Ethan's full power as sole trustee to freeze every joint account, terminate all unauthorized credit cards issued under the estate, and seize control of all financial documentation.
"Ethan, Claire," David greeted them warmly in the main study. "We’ve made substantial progress. The forensic audit of Arthur's accounts is complete, and the results are even more damning than we initially realized."
David spread several thick ledgers across the mahogany desk. "For the last twenty-four months, Eleanor was using the estate's capital to fund an offshore investment firm run by her brother, Richard. They lost nearly $300,000 in bad stock speculates and tried to cover the losses by forging Arthur’s name on a secondary land mortgage application."
Claire looked up in disbelief. "They were going to lose the entire estate?"
"They were weeks away from foreclosure," David confirmed. "If Ethan hadn't returned when he did, and if Arthur hadn't structured this irrevocable trust naming Claire as the protected sole beneficiary, Eleanor would have signed the property over to predatory lenders to pay off her personal debts, leaving both of you with nothing."
Ethan walked over to his father's old wall safe concealed behind a painting. He punched in the master security code provided in Arthur’s confidential attorney file. The heavy steel door clicked open.
Inside, resting on top of a stack of personal journals, was a sealed manila envelope marked: For My Son, Ethan - To Be Opened In The Event Of My Death.
Ethan pulled the envelope out, his heart heavy with memories of his father—a quiet, honorable man who had spent his final years suffering in silence while watching his wife and daughter turn into greedy, ruthless opportunists.
Ethan broke the wax seal and pulled out a handwritten letter.
"My Dearest Ethan,
If you are reading this, I have passed on, and you have returned from your service. I write this with a heavy heart, knowing the nature of the woman I married and the daughter we raised.
Eleanor’s ambition and Natalie’s arrogance have destroyed whatever warmth this family once possessed. I saw how they looked at Claire—a gentle, honest soul who loves you for who you are, not for the Vance name or the money. I knew that the moment I closed my eyes, they would try to strip her of everything and throw her to the wolves.
I could not allow that. This house, built by my grandfather, belongs to true love and honesty, not greed. That is why I placed everything into the Trust for Claire. She is the heart of your future, Ethan. Protect her, cherish her, and do not let Eleanor’s guilt or tears sway your justice.
Be the man I raised you to be.
With all my love,
Your Father, Arthur."
Ethan passed the letter to Claire. As she read her father-in-law's final words, tears of relief flowed freely down her cheeks. For two years, she had felt isolated, wondering if anyone believed her or cared about her suffering. Now, standing in the study, she knew that Arthur had seen her worth and had taken extraordinary legal steps to protect her from beyond the grave.
"We are purging this entire estate," Ethan said, turning to David with absolute resolve. "Every piece of luxury furniture Eleanor bought with stolen money will be auctioned off. All proceeds will be donated to local women's shelters and hypothermia recovery centers. We are stripping their names off every document associated with this family."

"And the criminal charges?" David asked.
"Push for the maximum sentence on every single count," Ethan answered without a moment’s hesitation. "No plea bargains. No leniency."
