Chapter 8 - The Price of Greed

Three weeks after the trial concluded, the court reconvened for the formal sentencing hearing. The atmosphere in the courtroom was solemn and decisive.

Judge Brooks sat behind her bench, looking down at Eleanor and Natalie Vance with cold severity.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Brooks began, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "I have rarely witnessed such a complete lack of human empathy, remorse, and basic moral decency. You treated a gentle young woman—a member of your own family—with a level of malice that borders on evil, driven entirely by greed and a delusion of aristocratic entitlement."

Judge Brooks picked up her pen to sign the formal judgment orders.

"Eleanor Vance, for the charge of Attempted Second-Degree Murder and related counts of grand larceny and physical assault, I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."

Eleanor gasped loudly, gasping for air as if she had been struck in the chest. "Twenty-five years?! No! You can't do this to me!"

"Natalie Vance," Judge Brooks continued, ignoring Eleanor’s outburst. "For your direct role in the physical restraint, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit fraud, I sentence you to twelve years in state prison, with eligibility for parole after eight years."

Judge Brooks struck her gavel down with a final, decisive thud. "In addition, the court issues a full, permanent order of protection in favor of Claire Vance and Ethan Vance. You are ordered to make full financial restitution of all embezzled funds to the Vance Family Trust, to be seized from your remaining personal assets. Remand the prisoners."

As court officers stepped forward to attach heavy waist chains and leg irons onto both women, Eleanor turned her tear-streaks face toward Ethan, who stood in the gallery holding Claire tightly around the waist.

"Ethan! Please!" Eleanor shrieked as she was dragged toward the rear exit doors. "I am your mother! You can't let them lock me away! Tell the judge you forgive me! Ethan! ETHAN!"

Ethan looked at his mother with calm, unflinching clarity. "You chose your path, Eleanor. Now you have to walk it."

Natalie wept bitterly, ducking her head in shame as she was shuffled out of the courtroom behind her mother, the heavy iron doors slamming shut behind them with a definitive clang that signaled the end of their reign.

Outside on the courthouse steps, bright afternoon sunlight broke through the winter clouds, illuminating the snow-covered square. Dozens of reporters gathered at the base of the stairs, but David Sloan stepped forward to make a brief, formal statement on behalf of the family.

"Today, justice was fully served," David announced to the assembled news cameras. "The Vance Estate, its legacy, and its assets have been completely vindicated and restored to their rightful, legal owner, Claire Vance. Captain Ethan Vance and his wife wish to thank the law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and medical staff whose swift action saved a life and brought absolute truth to light."

Ethan wrapped his warm military overcoat around Claire’s shoulders—the same coat he had wrapped around her on that terrifying night four months ago. But this time, her cheeks were rosy with health, her eyes were shining with hope, and her warm hand was nestled comfortably inside his.

"Ready to go home?" Ethan asked softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her temple.

Claire looked up at him, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Ethan. Let's go home."
