Chapter 4 - The Depths of Deception

The following morning, sunlight filtered through the blinds of the hospital room. Claire was awake, rested, and sitting up in bed, wrapped in a warm fleece gown Ethan had purchased from the hospital gift shop. Though her face was still pale and her injuries visible, the light had returned to her soft hazel eyes.

Ethan sat beside her, holding a tray of warm broth and toast, carefully feeding her taking every moment to reassure her. David Sloan returned at 9:00 AM, carrying a tablet containing the initial digital forensics report pulled from the estate’s security servers.

"Ethan, Claire, we have the full timeline of events from last night," David said, setting the tablet on the bedside table. "The police have reviewed the footage, and the evidence against Eleanor and Natalie is overwhelming."

Claire shivered slightly at the mention of their names, but Ethan gently took her hand, giving her strength. "Tell us everything, David."

David tapped the screen, displaying a series of high-resolution stills captured from the house’s exterior cameras. "At 7:15 PM yesterday, Claire was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Eleanor and Natalie entered, demanding she sign a quitclaim deed transferring her rights to the estate trust over to an offshore holding company registered under Natalie’s name."

"I told them I couldn't sign anything without talking to Ethan first," Claire said quietly, her voice growing firmer. "Arthur warned me before he died never to sign any paperwork they brought to me."

"And when you refused, Eleanor struck you," David said, pointing to the timestamps on the footage. "Natalie then grabbed your arms, causing the deep bruising on your wrists, and dragged you toward the rear porch doors. Eleanor stripped your coat and shoes off, throwing them into the trash bin inside, before shoving you into the storm entrance and locking the heavy Deadbolt doors."

Ethan’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white as he stared at the clear images of his mother and sister callously locking his wife out in the snow before walking calmly back to the dining table to eat.

"The thermal sensors outside showed the ambient temperature was minus six degrees Celsius," David continued. "You were outside for nearly forty-five minutes before Ethan arrived. If Ethan had arrived ten minutes later, the medical team stated the hypothermia would likely have been fatal."

"That constitutes attempted murder under state statutes," Ethan said, his voice cold and sharp as steel.

"Precisely," David nodded. "Furthermore, while reviewing the financial records linked to the trust, we uncovered something even more sinister. Over the past twenty-four months, Eleanor and Natalie have systematically embezzled over $450,000 from your father’s secondary business liquidity accounts."

Claire gasped. "Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars?"

"They forged Arthur's signature on several legal drafts prior to his passing and continued writing fraudulent checks using an outdated power of attorney," David explained. "They were using that money to finance high-end luxury lifestyles, pay off personal credit cards, and attempt to buy silence from local contractors who worked on the house."

"They knew the money was running out," Ethan realized. "That’s why they were desperate to force Claire to sign over the real estate last night. They wanted to mortgage the entire 200-acre estate to cover up their financial crimes before I returned."

"Exactly," David said. "Their bail hearing is scheduled for two o'clock this afternoon at the County Courthouse. They have retained a high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling, who is known for getting wealthy clients out of sticky situations."

Ethan stood up from his chair, his tall frame radiating authority. "I’m going to that hearing."

Claire reached out, grabbing his sleeve. "Ethan, please... be careful. They will do or say anything to twist the truth."

Ethan leaned down, gently kissing her cheek. "They spent two years twisting the truth while I was away, Claire. Today, the truth twists back."
