Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing

The County Courthouse was cold and formal, its marble floors echoing with the footsteps of attorneys, clerks, and police personnel. Inside Courtroom 302, District Judge Miriam Brooks presided over the afternoon bail proceedings.
Eleanor and Natalie Vance sat at the defense table, wearing orange holding-center jumpsuits. Their styled hair was messy, their makeup washed away, and their posture stripped of its usual regal stance. Sitting beside them was Richard Sterling, a sharp-looking attorney in a bespoke suit.
Ethan sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in his full military dress uniform, accompanied by David Sloan. His presence in the room was undeniable; his crisp posture and stern, unwavering gaze fixed directly on the defense table.
"Item 14 on the docket," Judge Brooks announced, shuffling her paperwork. "State of New York versus Eleanor Vance and Natalie Vance. Charges: Attempted second-degree murder, felony assault, unlawful imprisonment, and grand larceny. Counsel, state your appearance."
Richard Sterling stood up smoothly. "Richard Sterling for the defense, Your Honor. My clients plead absolutely not guilty to all counts. This entire situation is a tragic family misunderstanding that has been blown vastly out of proportion by an overzealous police department and a returning military son who is emotional."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, but he remained motionless, demonstrating strict military discipline.
"Misunderstanding, Mr. Sterling?" Judge Brooks raised an eyebrow, reviewing the police affidavits. "The medical report indicates the victim was found unconscious in sub-zero weather with severe hypothermia, a concussion, and physical restraint marks."
"My clients maintain that the alleged victim, Claire Vance, suffered a sudden psychiatric episode," Sterling argued smoothly, pacing slightly. "She became irrational, destroyed personal property inside the home, and ran outside willingly. My client, Eleanor Vance, attempted to calm her down, but Mrs. Claire Vance slammed the door shut herself. My clients are prominent community figures with no prior criminal records. We request immediate release on personal recognizance or minimal bail."
The Assistant District Attorney, Karen Mitchell, stood up immediately. "Your Honor, the State strongly opposes bail. We have in our possession crystal-clear high-definition security footage captured from the defendants' house that directly contradicts every word defense counsel just uttered."
Mitchell walked to the prosecution podium, handing a flash drive to the bailiff. "The video shows Defendant Natalie Vance forcibly restraining the victim while Defendant Eleanor Vance strikes her across the face. It further shows both defendants throwing the victim’s winter clothing inside and manually locking the double-deadbolt doors from the inside while the victim collapsed on the driveway."
Judge Brooks viewed the monitor on her bench. As the raw footage played, her expression transformed from neutral legal formality into deep, cold disgust.
At the defense table, Eleanor leaned over to Sterling, whispering frantically. "Can't you get that video thrown out?! It was taken without our permission!"
"Quiet!" Sterling whispered back angrily, realizing he had been completely blindsided by the strength of the evidence.
"In addition, Your Honor," Prosecutor Mitchell continued, "we have just received certified financial audit documents showing the defendants have embezzled nearly half a million dollars and were attempting to flee the state's jurisdiction once the real estate transfer was falsified."
Judge Brooks slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed throughout the marble room.
"I have seen enough," Judge Brooks stated firmly, staring down at Eleanor and Natalie. "The conduct shown in these recordings is cold-hearted, cruel, and poses a severe physical danger to the victim and the community. The defense's claim of a 'psychiatric episode' is a blatant attempt to mislead this court."
"Your Honor, please!" Eleanor cried out, losing her composure and grabbing the edge of the wooden barrier. "I am Eleanor Vance! My family built half this town! You cannot keep me in a cell!"
"Silence!" Judge Brooks warned sharply. "Bail is denied for both defendants. Eleanor Vance and Natalie Vance will remain in custody at the County Correctional Facility pending trial. Court is adjourned."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to handcuff the two women once again, Natalie broke into hysterical tears. Eleanor turned her head wildly, catching Ethan’s cold, unflinching gaze from the gallery.
"Ethan!" Eleanor screamed as she was led away toward the holding cells. "How can you do this to your own mother?! I raised you! You are destroying this family!"

Ethan did not break eye contact. He stood up, adjusted his tunic, and spoke in a clear, resonant voice that carried across the quiet courtroom.
"You destroyed this family the moment you touched my wife."
