Chapter 1 - The Bloodline of the Architect

The rhythmic beeping of the fetal monitor was the only sound in the private delivery room. Dr. Samuel Vale, whose name was etched in brass on the very facade of Mercy Crown Hospital, remained frozen. His surgical gloves were stained with amniotic fluid, his eyes locked onto the tiny crescent-shaped birthmark over my newborn son’s chest.
"Dr. Vale?" the head nurse asked, her hand hovering over the sterile swaddling blanket. "Is there a complication?"
Samuel didn't answer her. He looked past the baby, his piercing gray eyes—the exact same eyes my son had just opened—fixing onto my exhausted, sweat-drenched face. "Nora... why did you drive yourself here? Where is Carter? Where is my son?"
"Carter divorced me six weeks ago, Dr. Vale," I whispered, my voice cracked and dry from hours of labor. "He and Evelyn threw me out of the house. They used a forged prenatal test to claim this baby wasn't his. They froze my accounts. I've been scrubbing floors at a diner just to pay for pre-natal vitamins."
Samuel’s face went from pale shock to an ashen, terrifying mask of rage. He looked down at the baby again. He traced the crescent mark gently with his thumb.

"Evelyn told me you left the country after a corporate espionage scandal," Samuel said, his voice trembling with a mixture of sorrow and fury. "She told me you aborted the child. I cut my medical sabbatical short and flew back from Zurich today because I felt something was wrong. And now I see this..."
He held the baby out to me, his hands shaking. "This mark over his heart... it’s a genetic anomaly. A vascular hemangioma. I have it. My father had it. Carter was the only one born without it, and he hated that fact his entire life. This child is a Vale, Nora. He is my grandson, the true heir to the Vale estate, and God help my family for what they have done to you."
