Chapter 6 - The Federal Injunction

Before Carter could call for security, federal agents stepped out from the crowd, led by Marcus Vance. They didn't approach me; they walked straight to the stage.

"Carter Vale, Evelyn Vale," Marcus announced, pulling out official warrants. "You are under arrest for federal procurement fraud, identity theft, forgery, and systematic asset hiding during a marital dissolution. Step down from the podium."

Lila shrieked, backing away from Carter as if he were radioactive, her hands flying to the diamond necklace she had stolen from my life. Carter looked at me, his eyes wide with a pathetic, desperate plea. "Nora... please. We can talk about this. We can share the contract. I did it for our future..."

"You did it for your ego, Carter," I said, looking down at him from the steps of the stage. "You told me to prove the forgery. Consider it proven."

As the handcuffs clicked around their wrists, the investors scrambled for the exits, and the billion-dollar airport contract vanished into thin air before the ink on the commemorative banners could even dry.
