Chapter 7 - The Reclamation of Vale Development

Two weeks later, an emergency meeting of the Vale Development board of directors was called. With Carter and Evelyn held without bail in a federal detention facility, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Samuel sat at the head of the long mahogany table, but he didn't hold the gavel. He turned and handed it to me.

"As the majority shareholder of the Vale Trust, I am appointing Nora Brooks as the interim CEO and Chief Architect of this firm," Samuel announced to the remaining board members. "Her patented framework is the only asset keeping this company from total liquidation. If you want to save your investments, you will answer to her."
The board members, who had once looked away when I was thrown out of the building, stood up and applauded. I sat in the executive chair, looking out over the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows. My hands were still rough from the diner floor, but as I looked at the blueprints for the airport terminal resting before me, I knew that my name belonged exactly where it was—at the top of the masthead.
