Chapter 2 - The Interrogation Room

By 2:00 AM, Miguel was sitting in a windowless room at the precinct, the metallic smell of stale coffee lingering in the air. Detective Sarah Vance, a seasoned investigator known for her uncompromising approach to child harm cases, sat across from him. A heavy Manila folder lay between them.

"Let’s go over this one more time, Miguel," Detective Vance said, tapping her pen against the metal table. "Your wife, Elena Ramirez, has been incapacitated for six months. You're working sixteen hours a day between the grocery store and freelance handyman jobs. Money is tight. Medical bills are piling up."

"Yes, but what does that have to do with Lily?" Miguel pleaded, his eyes bloodshot.

"Stress, Mr. Ramirez. Desperation," Vance replied coldly. "Your daughter told the 911 dispatcher that you and Carlos gave her food right before her stomach began swelling. When the paramedics found her, she was crying, saying 'I think my dad did this to me.' Why would an eight-year-old lie about her own father?"

"She didn't lie! She’s eight years old and in unimaginable pain!" Miguel yelled, leaning forward despite the warning glare from the officer at the door. "She saw me give her the bowl Carlos brought. She associated the pain with the food! She doesn't understand medical terms—she just knew her stomach exploded in pain after eating!"

"Where is Carlos now, Miguel?" Vance asked smoothly. "Because when my officers went to his apartment, his truck was gone. He fled."

Miguel blinked, stunned. "Carlos ran? No... Carlos wouldn't... he was just trying to help us! He knew Elena couldn't cook tonight, so he brought over soup!"

"Or," Vance countered, leaning in close, "Carlos brought something toxic into your home, and you let him. Or worse, the two of you were trying to discipline her, and things went too far."

Before Miguel could respond, the door clicked open. A social worker named Marcus Reed stepped in, holding a tablet. His face was solemn.

"Detective," Marcus said quietly. "We just got a call from the hospital. Dr. Thorne is taking Lily into emergency exploratory surgery right now. Her blood pressure is dropping dangerously low."

Miguel stood up so fast his chair clattered to the floor. "I need to be there! She’s scared of the dark! She needs her dad!"

"You're not going anywhere, Mr. Ramirez," Vance said firmly, placing a hand on his chest. "Not until we know what that surgeon finds inside your daughter."
