Chapter 7 - The Wall of Bills

Though the truth had cleared Miguel’s name, a new, overwhelming shadow fell over the Ramirez home.
Lily's diagnosis required aggressive chemotherapy, specialized radiation, and potential follow-up surgeries. At the same time, Elena’s kidney dialysis costs were rising. Miguel found himself buried under a mountain of medical debt exceeding hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Sitting at his small kitchen table surrounded by overdue bills and collection notices, Miguel felt a familiar despair creeping back in. He couldn't work sixteen hours a day anymore; Lily needed him at her bedside during chemo treatments, and Elena needed care at home.
Carlos sat across from him, pushing a small envelope filled with cash across the table. "It’s not much, brother. Just twelve hundred dollars from my savings. Take it."
"Carlos, no... you need this money," Miguel protested, shaking his head.
"You cleared my name, Miguel," Carlos said firmly. "When the police brought me in, you told them I was a good man. You protected me. We are family. Family doesn't let each other drown."
Suddenly, a knock sounded at the front door. Miguel opened it to find Marcus Reed, the CPS social worker, accompanied by Detective Vance.
Miguel’s instincts flared up briefly. "Is there another investigation?"
"No, Mr. Ramirez," Vance smiled gently. "We're here because the community heard about what happened to Lily."
Marcus held up a laptop. "After the news broke about the innocent misunderstanding that saved Lily's life, Officer Brooks and Detective Vance started a GoFundMe campaign for your family. They told your story—how you worked night and day for your family, how Lily bravely called 911, and how close you came to losing everything."
Miguel looked at the screen. The counter was spinning rapidly: $342,850 raised of $300,000 goal.
Over five thousand people from across the state had donated small amounts, leaving messages of love, prayers, and support for the Ramirez family.

Miguel slumped into the doorframe, weeping openly. "I don't know how to thank you... I don't deserve this..."
"You do deserve it, Miguel," Vance said softly. "You showed everyone what a devoted father looks like."
