Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Treatment
Four months into chemotherapy, Lily lost her beautiful dark hair. The treatments left her exhausted, nauseous, and weak, but her spirit remained unbroken.
The hospital room became her second home. Miguel decorated the walls with colorful drawings, fairy lights, and pictures of their family before the illness struck. Every evening after his scaled-back shifts at the grocery store, Miguel would sit by her side, reading her storybooks until she fell asleep.
One evening, Dr. Thorne walked into the room with a set of new CT scan films mounted on a light box.
"How is she looking, Doctor?" Miguel asked, his heart beating nervously.
Dr. Thorne pointed to the scans. "The chemotherapy has done its job marvelously, Miguel. The remaining microscopic tumor cells around her mesenteric artery have completely shrunk. Pathology confirms she is officially in remission!"
Lily looked up from her coloring book. "Does that mean no more yucky red medicine?"
"No more yucky red medicine, Lily!" Dr. Thorne laughed, kneeling beside her bed. "You beat it. You're a true champion."

Meanwhile, good news continued to flow into the Ramirez household. Thanks to the community fund, Elena had been placed on an expedited organ donor list at a top transplant facility in Houston. Two weeks later, a matching kidney became available, and her transplant surgery was executed flawlessly.
For the first time in years, the heavy cloud of sickness that had hung over the Ramirez family began to lift, replaced by the bright rays of hope.
