Chapter 6 - Reunion in ICU
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was quiet, filled only with the rhythmic pulsing of cardiac monitors and the soft whir of ventilators.
Miguel walked slowly to Lily's bed. Bandages were wrapped tightly around her midsection, and IV lines fed medicine into her small arms. She looked so fragile, like a porcelain doll that might shatter at any moment.
He sat in the vinyl chair beside her bed and carefully stroked her forehead, whispering her favorite lullaby in Spanish.
Lily’s eyelids fluttered open. She looked up through a fog of anesthesia, seeing her father's face illuminated by the moonlight outside the window.
"Daddy...?" she whispered weakly.
"I'm here, mija. I'm right here," Miguel choked out, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles.
"Daddy... am I in trouble?" Lily’s voice was barely an audible squeak. "The police officer... I thought... I thought you put something bad in my food to make me sleep..."
Miguel wiped his tears, offering her the softest, most loving smile he could muster. "No, baby. You are never in trouble. You didn't do anything wrong. You were sick, Lily. Very, very sick with something hidden inside your belly. The doctors took it out."
Lily looked down at her stomach, her brow furrowing in confusion. "So... you didn't hurt me?"
"I would give my own life before I ever let anything hurt you, Lily," Miguel said fiercely, holding her hand against his cheek. "I love you more than all the stars in the Texas sky."
Lily’s small hand squeezed his finger back with what little strength she had. "I'm sorry I said that to the 911 lady, Daddy. I was just so scared."

"I know, mija. I know," Miguel wept. "You were very brave. You saved your own life by calling for help."
Outside the glass door, Detective Vance, Officer Brooks, and Dr. Thorne watched the reunion in respectful silence. Vance wiped a tear from her cheek, feeling a profound sense of relief—and a deep conviction to help this struggling family through the long road ahead.
