Chapter 5 - The Heartbreaking Truth Revealed

Back at the precinct, Detective Vance walked into the interrogation room where Miguel sat with his head buried in his hands, praying silently.

Vance pulled out a chair and sat down. Her demeanor had completely changed. The harshness in her eyes was replaced by profound sympathy.

"Miguel," she began softly.

Miguel looked up, his chest tightening with fear. "Is she... did she die?"

"No. She survived the surgery," Vance said quickly.

Miguel let out a ragged sob of relief, pressing his palms against his face. "Thank God... thank God..."

"Miguel, I owe you an apology," Vance continued, her voice heavy with emotion. "Dr. Thorne just called us with the preliminary pathology report. There was no physical trauma. There was no poison in her system."

Miguel blinked, processing the words slowly. "No poison? But... why did her stomach swell? Why was she in so much pain?"

"Lily has a stage-four pediatric kidney cancer—a Wilms tumor," Vance explained gently. "It grew silently behind her internal organs. Last night, the tumor reached a point where it ruptured internally. Eating the soup caused her blood flow to shift to her stomach, which triggered acute vascular strangulation. To a eight-year-old child, that sudden, tearing pain felt like the food itself was burning her."

Miguel stared at her, frozen in shock. "Cancer? My little girl has cancer?"

"She had been hiding smaller bellyaches from you for weeks, Miguel," Vance said, her eyes glistening with tears. "She knew how stressed you were about her mother's illness and money. She held it in until her body couldn't physically take it anymore. When she called 911, she thought the food was bad because that's the only logical explanation her young mind could create."

The irony was devastating. The accusation that had almost destroyed Miguel's life was actually a child's innocent, confused attempt to explain an invisible monster eating her alive from the inside.

Miguel stood up, tears streaming down his face. "I have to see her. Please... take me to my daughter."
