Chapter 3 - Into the Operating Theater
The bright, sterile overhead surgical lamps lit up Operating Room 3. Dr. Thorne pulled on her sterile gloves, her mind focused entirely on the small body on the table. The heart monitor beeped in a fast, erratic cadence.
"Scalpel," Dr. Thorne requested.
As she made the primary incision into Lily’s abdominal wall, the surgical team braced themselves for what they expected to see—bruised tissue, torn muscle from trauma, or signs of corrosive chemical damage.
Instead, as the abdominal cavity was exposed, the room fell silent save for the suction machine.
"What is that?" the chief assistant surgeon gasped.
Nestled near Lily's retroperitoneum was a massive, multi-lobed mass, heavily vascularized, that had begun leaking dark fluid into her abdomen. It wasn't a ruptured organ from a punch, nor was it the inflammatory response of a consumed poison.
"It’s a pediatric tumor," Dr. Thorne murmured, her heart heavy with sudden realization. "A rare, aggressive Wilms tumor... but it’s mutated. It has grown around the mesenteric artery."
"Look at the tissue inflammation here," the anesthesiologist noted, pointing to the intestinal wall. "It’s severely necrotic. Why did it flare up so suddenly tonight?"
Dr. Thorne examined the stomach lining carefully. "It wasn't poison. It was acute vascular occlusion. As the tumor expanded to a critical size tonight, it completely cut off blood flow to her digestive tract. Eating anything—even a spoonful of warm soup—triggered a massive metabolic shock because her intestines were starving for oxygen."

The realization hit Dr. Thorne like a tidal wave. The poor child had been living with a silent, invisible killer growing inside her for months. The soup hadn't caused the condition; the simple act of digesting warm food had been the final straw that caused the tumor’s thin blood vessels to burst, creating the sensation of an internal fire.
"Get pathology down here immediately," Dr. Thorne commanded, her voice steadying. "And call Detective Vance. We have a massive misunderstanding on our hands... but this girl is still in critical danger."
