Chapter 4 - THE SAFE HAVEN

Ten minutes later, the wail of sirens echoed down the rain-slicked street outside the Westbridge Police Station.
An advanced life support ambulance from Westbridge General Hospital pulled up to the curb, its red and blue lights flashing against the wet brick facade. Four paramedics burst through the front doors, pushing a high-tech mobile birthing stretcher, led by Dr. Sarah Lin, a sharp, seasoned emergency obstetric physician.
"Where's the patient?" Dr. Lin demanded, scanning the tense, crowded lobby.
"In here, Doctor!" Elena said, unlocking Interview Room Two.
Inside, Grace was breathing heavily, lying on her side on the floor, her hand clutching the blanket Elena had given her. Contractions were hitting her every three minutes, sharp and powerful.
Dr. Lin dropped to her knees beside Grace, opening her diagnostic kit. "Grace? My name is Dr. Lin. I'm an independent physician from Westbridge General. You are safe now. I need to examine you."
Grace looked into Dr. Lin's eyes, seeing only professional calm and genuine care. She let out a long, ragged sob of relief. "Please... don't let them take my baby."
"Nobody is taking your baby, sweetheart," Dr. Lin said gently, placing a pulse oximeter on Grace's finger and applying a fetal heart monitor to her belly. "Heartbeat is strong. One hundred and forty beats per minute. The baby is healthy, but you're thirty-four weeks along and in active labor. We need to move you to our maternity ward right now."
Outside in the lobby, Caleb tried to push past Officer Ryan Mercer toward the interview room.
"I am the legal husband!" Caleb shouted. "I have the right to accompany her in the ambulance!"
Dr. Lin stepped out of the interview room, her face set in stone. She looked at Caleb, then at the police officers standing around him.
"Under state emergency medical protocol," Dr. Lin declared firmly, "a patient in active labor who expresses explicit fear of a spouse has the legal right to bar that individual from the transport vehicle and the delivery room. Mr. Bennett, you are barred."
"You can't do this!" Margaret Bennett screamed, her eyes wild with rage as she pointed a manicured finger at Dr. Lin. "We have rights! We have court papers!"
Prosecutor Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding a newly printed document handed to him by a clerk who had just arrived from the county courthouse.
"Not anymore, Mrs. Bennett," Marcus said smoothly. "Ten minutes ago, Family Court Judge Patricia Reyes issued an emergency administrative stay on Judge Miller's warrant, pending a full evidentiary hearing on medical fraud. Furthermore, I have issued an emergency protective order prohibiting Caleb Bennett, Margaret Bennett, and any representative of St. Catherine's Hospital from coming within five hundred feet of Grace Bennett or her child."
Caleb stumbled back as if struck by a physical blow. His attorney pulled him by the arm, whispering frantically into his ear as they realized their trap had completely collapsed.
The paramedics carefully lifted Grace onto the gurney, wheeling her out through the lobby. As she passed Elena, Grace reached out, grabbing the detective's sleeve.
"Elena..." Grace whispered, her eyes filled with tears. "Please... come with me."
Elena looked at Marcus Vance, who gave her a firm nod of approval.

"I'm right behind you, Grace," Elena said, taking her hand. "I promised I wouldn't leave you alone with him. I meant it."
Elena walked out of the police station into the cool morning rain, climbing into the back of the ambulance beside Grace, leaving Caleb Bennett and his mother standing defeated under the flashing lights of the precinct lobby.
