Chapter 6 - THE WHISTLEBLOWER

While Grace was holding her newborn daughter in Westbridge General, Detective Elena Ruiz and Prosecutor Marcus Vance were far from finished.

At 9:00 AM, a black sedan pulled up to the rear entrance of the County District Attorney's Office.

Stepping out of the vehicle, escorted by two plainclothes detectives, was Nora Ellis—the labor and delivery nurse from St. Catherine's who had cut off Grace's hospital bracelet and helped her escape through the service doors.

Nora sat in an interrogation room, drinking a cup of coffee, her hands trembling slightly as she looked at Elena and Marcus.

"Nurse Ellis," Marcus said, placing a digital recording device on the table. "Thank you for coming in voluntarily. We need your sworn testimony regarding the events at St. Catherine's last night."

Nora took a slow sip of coffee, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves.

"I couldn't stay quiet anymore," Nora said, her voice dripping with deep, lingering indignation. "For the last three months, Grace Bennett was kept in a private room on the fourth floor—a room equipped with heavy security keypads that required administrative clearance to enter. Her husband paid for private round-the-clock nursing staff, but he explicitly instructed them to restrict her phone calls and visitor access."

"Who issued those orders?" Elena asked, taking notes.

"Richard Bennett—Caleb's father," Nora replied firmly. "He sits on the hospital's executive ethics board. Two weeks ago, Dr. Evelyn Shaw found out that Grace's medical charts were being altered in the electronic record system. Someone was adding false entries claiming Grace was experiencing severe auditory hallucinations and expressing thoughts of infanticide."

Elena's eyes narrowed. "Infanticide?"

"They were building a case to prove she was an immediate danger to the child," Nora explained, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "When Dr. Shaw threatened to go to the State Medical Board, Richard Bennett called an emergency board meeting, suspended Dr. Shaw's hospital privileges, and placed Grace under the direct care of Dr. Harrison Vance—Caleb's uncle."

"And last night?" Marcus asked.

"At midnight, Dr. Vance entered an order for a high-dose Pitocin drip," Nora said, pulling a thumb drive from her pocket and setting it on the table. "I downloaded the complete, unedited server logs before I left. It shows that Dr. Vance entered the order using Dr. Shaw's forged digital credentials. They wanted to force Grace into labor, take the baby, and have her committed to a private psychiatric institution in upstate New York before morning."

Elena took the thumb drive, holding it like a golden key.

"Nora," Elena said softly, resting her hand over the nurse's arm. "What you did last night saved two lives. You are a true hero."

Nora wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling through her exhaustion. "I just did what any real nurse should do. I protected my patient."

Marcus turned to Elena, his eyes gleaming with prosecutorial triumph. "We have the electronic evidence, the whistleblower testimony, the forged medical orders, and the financial motive. It's time to execute the warrants."
