Chapter 1 - The Shattering of Glass

The heavy oak front door of the Morrison estate didn't just open; it was breached with the clinical, unyielding precision of an elite extraction unit.

The low, rumbling hum of three black federal-grade transport vehicles idling on the gravel driveway vibrated straight through the floorboards of the formal dining room. Before Brendan could even process the sudden change in air pressure, the double doors of the dining hall were pushed inward with a sharp bang that rattled the crystal chandelier.

Arthur Vance, Executive Vice President of Legal Operations for Apex Global Holdings—a man whose signature commanded billions and whose presence struck fear into Fortune 500 boardrooms—strode into the room. Behind him stood Captain Vance of the state tactical compliance division and four armed corporate security detail officers in dark suits.

The laughter died in Brendan’s throat, turning into a strangled, pathetic gasp.

Diane Morrison’s wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the Persian rug, sending dark red liquid splashing across the fabric like fresh blood.

"Arthur?" Brendan stammered, scrambling backward in his chair so fast it tipped over, sending him crashing onto the floor. "Mr. Vance? What... what are you doing here? How did you get past the security gates?"

Arthur didn’t even look down at Brendan. His sharp, steel-grey eyes swept past the overturned chair, past the cowering figure of Jessica, and locked directly onto me.

I sat at the end of the long mahogany table, soaked to the skin, shivering slightly from the freezing water, but my gaze was as steady and unyielding as a glacier.

Arthur stopped three feet from my chair. With absolute, military-style reverence, he pulled a crisp, dry cashmere overcoat from his arm and draped it gently over my shivering shoulders, completely ignoring the water staining the fabric. Then, he snapped to a crisp, flawless posture and bowed his head.

"Protocol 7 is fully executed, Madam Chair," Arthur’s voice rang clear and authoritative through the silent room. "Every subsidiary account, liquidity reserve, and proprietary asset held by Morrison Enterprises has been locked, frozen, and transferred into the primary trust under your direct administrative override."

Brendan crawled up from the floor, his face the color of curdled milk. He stared at Arthur, then at me, his brain violently struggling to bridge the impossible chasm between the woman he had just humiliated and the title Arthur had just spoken.

"Madam... Madam Chair?" Brendan whispered, shaking his head frantically. "Mr. Vance, you’ve made a mistake! This is Cassidy! She’s... she’s unemployed! She lives off my family’s charity! She’s carrying my child, but she’s a nobody!"

"A nobody?" Arthur turned slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits as he glared down at Brendan. "You arrogant, miserable fool. You speak to the sole majority shareholder, founder, and supreme executive chairwoman of Apex Global Holdings—the multi-billion-dollar enterprise that owns your company, your salary, this house, and every single cent your mother ever boasted about."

Jessica let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, stumbling back against the sideboard. "No! That's impossible! Apex Global is owned by an anonymous trust! It's a phantom entity!"

"The phantom is sitting right here," I said softly, pulling Arthur’s cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders as I stood up from the chair.

The water dripped from my hemline onto the rug, but I didn't care anymore. The illusion was gone. The reckoning had begun.
