Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Thursday brought a torrential downpour that lashed against the wide glass windows of Apex Tower, but inside the executive suite, the atmosphere was serene and victorious.

The board of directors had convened for an emergency extraordinary session to ratify the permanent absorption of Morrison Enterprises into Apex Global’s primary infrastructure division.

I sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, flanked by Arthur, Marcus, and twenty-five senior executives who managed trillions in global assets. Every single person in the room looked at me not just with professional respect, but with profound, unwavering loyalty.

"Madam Chair," Marcus said, sliding a final settlement document across the table. "Brendan’s legal counsel has formally withdrawn all contestation regarding the divorce and asset division. They realize that fighting Apex Global in federal court is equivalent to swimming upstream in a waterfall of acid."

"Good," I replied, scanning the signatures. "And Diane?"

"Hospitalized for acute stress and nervous exhaustion," Arthur added quietly. "Her friends at the country club have all blocked her numbers. Jessica’s family has publicly disowned the Morrison name, and Jessica herself has reportedly booked a one-way ticket to Europe to escape the fallout."

I signed the final page of the document with a steady, elegant stroke of my fountain pen, sliding it back across the table.

"Let this serve as a permanent reminder to anyone who thinks wealth and power give them the right to dehumanize others," I said, looking around the room at the assembled executives. "We build empires not to crush people, but to protect those who refuse to let themselves be broken."

The room erupted into a unanimous, respectful round of applause—not the forced, superficial clapping of high society cocktail parties, but the genuine salute of warriors who had won a long, hard war.
