Chapter 2 - The Audit of Arrogance

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Diane Morrison clutched the edge of the dining table, her knuckles stark white, her chest heaving as if she had just been struck across the face. The woman who had proudly poured dirty water over my head moments ago was now staring at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave to drag her straight to hell.

"Cassidy..." Diane choked out, her voice trembling, losing every ounce of its haughty poison. "Cassidy, darling... it was a joke. A family joke! You know how we like to tease! We didn't mean..."

"You didn't mean what, Diane?" I asked, stepping forward, my voice cutting through the room like broken glass. "Did you mean to remind me that I was 'poor' and 'burdened'? Did you mean to show me how insignificant I was under your roof?"

Brendan scrambled onto his knees, his face twisted in a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. He reached out, trying to grab the hem of my soaked dress, but one of the security guards stepped forward instantly, kicking his hand away with a sharp boot-heel strike to the hardwood floor.

"Cassidy, please!" Brendan begged, tears of pure panic springing to his eyes. "We’re married—well, expecting a child! We’re a family! You can’t just... you can’t ruin us over a bucket of water!"

"We aren't a family, Brendan," I said coldly, looking down at the man who had mocked me while his new girlfriend giggled at my humiliation. "We were an arrangement you tolerated until you thought you could trade me up for someone from your mother’s country club circle. And as for ruining you—I didn't ruin you. You built your entire life on a foundation of debt, fraud, and unearned cruelty. I merely stopped propping you up."

Arthur stepped forward, flipping open a secure tablet.

"Madam Chair," Arthur reported formally, ignoring Brendan’s whimpering. "Protocol 7 has successfully severed all lines of corporate credit to Morrison Enterprises. Furthermore, the commercial real estate loans backing this estate and three of Diane’s subsidiary manufacturing plants have been immediately called in by our primary lending division. Total liquidation will commence at 0800 hours tomorrow."

Jessica gasped, her hands flying to her face. "Liquidation? But... but my father’s investments are tied up in Morrison Enterprises! If you liquidate, my family loses everything too!"

I turned my gaze slowly toward Jessica, remembering how she had covered her mouth to stifle her giggles when the ice water hit my hair.

"Then I suggest you call your father, Jessica," I said evenly. "Tell him that mocking pregnant women at Sunday dinner is an expensive hobby."

Arthur looked at me for final instructions. "Shall we secure the premises, Madam Chair? Or would you prefer to leave these tenants to contemplate their new financial reality?"

"Let’s leave them to the dust, Arthur," I replied, turning toward the grand foyer. "And have the legal team prepare the divorce and sole custody filings. I want my daughter born far away from people who measure human worth in bank accounts they didn't even earn."
