Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the CommissionThe drive back from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side was conducted in terrifying silence.

Mia, exhausted from her sugar high and excitement, had fallen asleep in the back seat of the Maybach, her head resting comfortably on her mother's lap. Elena sat frozen, staring at the back of Damiano’s neck. She didn't know the specifics of what Rafael had whispered, but she had felt the instant shift in the atmosphere—the sudden transformation of the gentle man holding a pink plastic spoon back into a apex predator ready for war.

When the Maybach pulled into the courtyard of the Verrone estate, two dozen armed soldiers in black tactical suits were already patrolling the grounds. Heavy black SUVs were parked in formation near the garage, engines idling.

Damiano stepped out of the car, turning to Elena.

"Take Mia downstairs to the staff residential wing," Damiano commanded smoothly. "Do not leave the estate grounds today. The security perimeter has been locked."

"Mr. Verrone..." Elena hesitated, stepping out onto the cobblestones, holding the sleeping girl in her arms. "Is... is something bad happening?"

Damiano looked down at Mia's peaceful, sleeping face.

"Nothing that concerns you, Elena," he said softly. "You and your daughter are safe here. Go inside."

Damiano turned on his heel and marched toward his private war room in the east wing, Rafael trailing half a step behind him.

The war room was a stark, windowless space equipped with state-of-the-art security monitors, satellite maps, and encrypted communications servers. Four senior capos—captains of the Verrone crime family—were already standing around the central steel table when Damiano walked in.

"Report," Damiano ordered, throwing his suit jacket over the back of a chair.

Capo Bruno, a scarred veteran with grey hair and a broad chest, slammed a printout map onto the table. "Marchetti struck at Pier 42 at eleven-fifteen AM. They ambushed our crew during a routine timber import transfer. Marco and Leo are dead. They took two million dollars in unregistered bonds."

"Marchetti is testing you, Boss," another capo, Gianni, added angrily. "He saw what happened at the gala last night. He thinks you're distracted by... by that maid's kid! The whole street is talking about how the Don skipped a Commission meeting to eat ice cream in Brooklyn!"

Damiano slowly lifted his eyes, staring at Gianni.

Gianni immediately lowered his head, a cold sweat breaking out on his collar. "I... I meant no disrespect, Don Verrone..."

"Silvio Marchetti has been waiting for an excuse to break the 2021 truce since the day my wife died," Damiano said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He believes that because I spared his family three years ago, I have grown weak. He believes that because I showed humanity to a child, my blood has gone soft."

Damiano stepped up to the steel table, leaning his hands flat against the surface.

"Send word to Don Castri and the other families," Damiano commanded. "I am calling an emergency meeting of the Five Families tonight at midnight. Location: The abandoned warehouse at Pier 42."

Rafael blinked. "Pier 42? That's Marchetti's territory now! You're walking right into his trap!"

"No," Damiano replied, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire. "I am inviting him to his own execution. If Marchetti wants war... I will give him an empire of ash."

While the capos rushed out to mobilize forty soldiers and prepare heavily armored vehicles, Damiano walked back up to the main residence.

He found himself standing outside the staff residential quarters in the basement level. The hallway was quiet, smelling of clean linen and lavender. Through a small glass pane in the door of Apartment 4B, he saw Elena sitting on the edge of a small bed, reading a storybook to Mia.

Mia was laughing, her small arms wrapped around a stuffed brown bear. Elena was smiling, stroking her daughter's hair with a tenderness that made Damiano’s chest ache with a fierce, protective instinct he hadn't felt in three long years.

He didn't knock. He just stood there in the shadow of the hallway, watching them.

Suddenly, Elena looked up toward the door. She saw his silhouette in the glass. She kissed Mia's forehead, tucked her in, and quietly stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind her.

"Mr. Verrone," Elena whispered, looking up at him in the dim hallway light. "Is there... something you need?"

Damiano looked down at her. She looked so small, so fragile compared to the violent world he was about to step into tonight. Yet, she had built a life of warmth and safety for her child inside a world of darkness.

"I came to return this," Damiano said, reaching into his vest pocket. He pulled out the folded construction paper drawing Mia had given him.

Elena gasped softly. "You... you kept it?"

"A contract is a contract, Elena," Damiano said, handing her the paper. "My time as Mia's one-day father ends at midnight."

Elena accepted the paper, her fingers brushing against his. A strange, electricity shot through her arm, making her breath catch in her throat. She looked into his dark grey eyes, seeing the unspoken weight of the violence he was carrying tonight.

"Will you... will you come back tomorrow?" Elena asked, the question slipping out before she could stop herself.

May you like

Damiano stared at her for a long, silent moment.

"I always finish my business, Elena," Damiano whispered. "Tell Mia... her one-day daddy never breaks a promise."
