Chapter 5 - The Midnight Summit

Pier 42 at midnight was a wasteland of rusted shipping containers, rotting wooden planks, and the cold, salty spray of the East River. Rain had begun to fall again, a heavy, freezing drizzle that slicked the asphalt and blurred the amber streetlights in the distance.

Six black SUVs belonging to the Verrone family pulled into the central clearing between two towering stacks of steel containers.

Damiano stepped out of the lead vehicle. He wore a heavy black wool trench coat over his charcoal suit. Beside him walked Rafael, carrying a heavy leather briefcase, followed by twenty heavily armed Verrone soldiers carrying suppressed automatic rifles.

Standing near the edge of the pier, surrounded by thirty of his own men, was Don Silvio Marchetti.

Marchetti was sixty-five years old, overweight, with slicked-back grey hair and a cruel, narrow face. Beside him stood Don Emilio Castri and representatives from the other two families—men who had come to witness whether the Verrone empire was about to crumble or rise in blood.

"Damiano!" Marchetti called out, his voice loud and arrogant above the sound of the rain. "You came! And you brought a full army! Tell me... did you manage to finish your ice cream before coming out to play with the big boys?"

A few of Marchetti's soldiers laughed nervously.

Damiano didn't laugh. He walked slowly forward until he was standing ten feet from Marchetti. His arms hung casually at his sides, completely unfazed by the thirty rifles pointed directly at his chest.

"Silvio," Damiano spoke softly, his voice cutting through the rain. "You killed two of my men today. You stole two million dollars in bonds. You breached the 2021 truce."

"You breached the truce the moment you became unfit to lead!" Marchetti spat, taking a step forward. "Look at you! The great Damiano Verrone... kneeling in front of a maid's bastard child in front of the whole city! You've gone soft, Damiano! Your heart died with your wife, and now you're playing house with trash to pretend you're still human!"

The surrounding bosses held their breath.

Damiano didn't flinch at the mention of his late wife. Three years ago, those words would have driven him into a blind rage. Tonight, they hit him like dust against marble.

"You think love makes a man soft, Silvio?" Damiano asked, his grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, ancient coldness. "You are mistaken. Love gives a man something to protect. And a man with something to protect is far more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose."

Damiano gave a tiny nod to Rafael.

Rafael opened the leather briefcase, turning it toward Don Castri and the other family heads. Inside the briefcase were stack upon stack of encrypted hard drives, ledger books, and bank statements.

"What is that?" Don Castri demanded, frowning.

"Those are the complete financial records of Marchetti’s private offshore accounts," Damiano stated coolly. "Including the ledger showing that Silvio has been stealing three percent of the Commission's joint port tariffs for the past four years. He didn't kill my men for territory today. He killed them to cover up a audit I launched last week."

Don Castri’s face went dark. He turned his head slowly, glaring at Marchetti. "Is this true, Silvio?"

"It’s a lie! He forged it!" Marchetti shouted, his face turning pale. "Kill them! Kill them all!"

Marchetti reached for his belt holster—

THWACK.

A high-caliber sniper round tore through the rain, striking the pavement six inches in front of Marchetti's left boot. A second later, red laser sights flickered to life across the dark containers surrounding the pier. Dozens of red dots hovered directly over the chests of Marchetti’s thirty soldiers.

Damiano hadn't brought twenty men to Pier 42. He had surrounded the entire harbor hours before Marchetti even arrived.

"Your soldiers are smart men, Silvio," Damiano said, stepping closer to the trembling old Don. "Ask them if they want to die for a thief who steals from his own Commission."

One by one, Marchetti’s men slowly lowered their weapons, stepping back into the shadows of the containers.

Marchetti stood alone in the rain, his breath coming in frantic, white puffs. "Damiano... wait... we can talk about this! We can negotiate!"

Damiano stood directly in front of Marchetti. He reached out, taking the old man by his lapels, pulling him close until their faces were inches apart.

"You mentioned my wife, Silvio," Damiano whispered into his ear. "And you mentioned a six-year-old child who asked me for help. Remember this moment. Remember that the only reason you are leaving this pier alive tonight is because that little girl asked me to be a good man today."

Damiano released him, pushing him hard onto the wet asphalt.

May you like

"You are stripped of your seat on the Commission," Damiano announced to the gathered bosses. "Your territory in Brooklyn now belongs to the Verrone family. If I see your face in New York after sunrise... I will not send soldiers. I will come for you myself."

Damiano turned his back on the fallen Don and walked back toward his Maybach, his long trench coat snapping in the wind.
