Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Terrace

The sun was setting behind the Manhattan skyline, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft pink.
Elena stood on the grand terrace of the second floor, leaning against the cold stone balustrade. She had seen everything from the window—she had seen Joey arrive, she had seen the swift, absolute terror Damiano had struck into the man who had haunted her nightmares for six years, and she had seen Joey led away in a black car, never to return.
The heavy glass terrace doors opened softly behind her.
Damiano stepped out onto the stone tiles. He carried two glasses of warm spiced wine. He walked over to the balustrade, handing her one of the glasses.
"Joey is gone, Elena," Damiano said quietly, looking out over the illuminated gardens below. "He signed the adoption release papers twenty minutes ago. He will never bother you or Mia again."
Elena held the warm glass, tears spilling over her lashes, glistening in the twilight. "You... you didn't kill him?"
Damiano looked over at her, his grey eyes soft. "Mia asked me to be a good man, Elena. I intend to honor her request whenever possible."
Elena let out a shaky, emotional laugh, wiping her tears with her thumb. "Thank you, Damiano... for everything. You gave us a life I never thought we could have."
Damiano set his glass down on the stone ledge. He turned to face her, stepping closer until there was no distance left between them.
"I didn't give you a life, Elena," Damiano whispered, reaching out to gently cradle her cheek in his warm, scarred palm. "You and Mia gave me mine. Three years ago, when my wife died, I thought my heart was buried in the ground. I built this house into a fortress because I was afraid to feel anything again. But then a brave little girl walked into my hall with a piece of paper..."
Elena looked up into his eyes, her heart beating rapidly, her breath catching in her throat. "Damiano..."
"I love her, Elena," Damiano said, his voice raw with deep, unspoken emotion. "And I love you."
Elena gasped softly. She dropped her glass onto the small iron table beside them, threw her arms around his broad neck, and pulled him down into a passionate, breathtaking kiss.
Damiano’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, lifting her against his chest, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world. The cold, lonely years of grief melted away in the warmth of her lips, replaced by a fierce, permanent promise of protection and devotion.
When they finally pulled back, breathless, Elena rested her forehead against his, a radiant smile on her face.

"Mia is going to be so happy," Elena whispered happily.
"Not as happy as I am," Damiano replied, kissing her lips one more time.
