Chapter 6 - The Morning After

The morning sun broke over Manhattan, washing the rain-slicked streets in bright golden light.

In the staff kitchen of the Verrone estate, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted bread filled the air. Elena Rossi stood near the stove, flipping pancakes on a large iron griddle. She wore her clean white apron, but her mind was miles away.

She hadn't slept a wink all night. Every sound of a car engine in the courtyard had sent her heart leaping into her throat. She had spent the dark hours between three and five AM staring at the ceiling, wondering if Damiano Verrone was lying dead on a pier somewhere in Brooklyn.

"Mommy! Look!" Mia’s excited voice shattered her thoughts.

Elena turned around.

Standing in the doorway of the staff kitchen was Damiano.

He didn't look like a crime lord who had just restructured the entire underworld eight hours ago. He was wearing a casual black cashmere sweater, dark trousers, his hair still slightly damp from a morning shower. In his right hand, he carried a small, beautifully wrapped package tied with a yellow ribbon.

Mia scrambled off her wooden chair and ran across the kitchen floor, throwing her arms around his knees. "One-Day Daddy! You came back!"

Damiano crouched down, a rare, genuine smile lighting up his dark face. He picked her up effortlessly, balancing her on his hip.

"I told you I never break a promise, Mia," Damiano said softly.

Elena stood near the stove, the spatula frozen in her hand, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Mr. Verrone... you're... you're alright?"

Damiano looked over at Elena, his grey eyes warm as they took in her relieved expression. "I am fine, Elena. Business has been concluded."

Mia reached for the wrapped package in his hand. "Is that for me? Is it?"

"It is," Damiano said, handing her the gift.

Mia tore open the paper with frantic enthusiasm. Inside was a beautiful, handcrafted silver locket on a delicate chain. She popped the tiny latch open. Inside the locket was a small, high-definition print of the photograph taken at the school yesterday—Damiano sitting at the tiny wooden table, holding his pink plastic spoon, with Mia smiling radiantly beside him.

Mia gasped, her eyes shining with pure joy. "It's us! Look, Mommy! It's us!"

Elena walked over, looking down at the tiny photograph. Tears welled up in her eyes—not tears of fear, but of an overwhelming, bittersweet emotion she couldn't fully comprehend.

"Mr. Verrone... this is too much," Elena whispered, looking up at him. "You don't owe us anything."

Damiano set Mia down gently on her feet. "Mia, go show your new locket to the kitchen staff in the pantry."

"Okay!" Mia chirped, dashing off down the hallway with her silver treasure.

Once the child was out of earshot, Damiano stepped closer to Elena. The kitchen suddenly felt very small, very warm.

"Your contract as a maid in this house is terminated, Elena," Damiano declared softly.

Elena’s heart dropped into her stomach. Her face went pale. "What? You're... you're firing me?"

"No," Damiano said, reaching out to gently take her hand. His warm, calloused fingers wrapped around her small palm, sending a surge of electricity straight to her core. "I am reassigning you. Starting today, you and Mia will move out of the basement quarters. The suite on the second floor in the west wing has been prepared for you."

Elena stared at him, completely speechless. "The... the second floor? Mr. Verrone, that's where your family lives! I am a housekeeper!"

"You were a housekeeper yesterday," Damiano murmured, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Yesterday, your daughter asked me to be her father for one day. Last night, while I was standing in the rain facing my enemies, I realized something."

May you like

Elena held her breath. "What?"

"One day is not enough," Damiano whispered, his thumb gently tracing the pulse point on her wrist. "Not for Mia. And certainly not for me."
