Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Sunlight

The transition from the basement quarters to the west wing of the Verrone estate felt like stepping into a different world.
The suite on the second floor was massive—flooded with natural sunlight from floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the private gardens. Mia had her own bedroom decorated with soft pastel colors, filled with books, stuffed animals, and a small white desk for her drawing.
For two weeks, peace settled over the estate.
To the outside world, Damiano Verrone remained the feared Don who had brought Silvio Marchetti to his knees. But inside the iron gates of the Upper East Side mansion, a quiet transformation was taking place. Every evening at six o'clock, Damiano returned home, discarded his suit jacket, and sat at the long dining room table to help Mia with her elementary reading homework.
Elena watched from across the room, her feelings deepening into something profound and terrifying. She had fallen in love with a man whose name made the city tremble—a man who carried the heavy scars of violence on his body, yet held her daughter’s storybooks with absolute delicacy.
However, in the world of the syndicate, peace is always an illusion.
It was a chilly Thursday afternoon when Rafael Conti entered the master study, his face grave.
"Damiano," Rafael said, shutting the door tightly. "We have a problem in Brooklyn."
Damiano looked up from his financial ledgers. "What problem?"
"It’s not Marchetti," Rafael revealed. "It's Elena's ex-husband's family. A man named Joey 'The Rat' Moretti. He just got released from Sing Sing prison three days ago."
Damiano’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Moretti... the gambler who abandoned Elena six years ago?"
"The same," Rafael nodded. "Moretti found out that Elena isn't living in Queens anymore. He’s been sniffing around her old neighborhood, asking questions about the kid. And yesterday, someone in Brooklyn told him that his ex-wife is living inside the Verrone estate."
Damiano’s jaw clenched, a muscle ticking beneath his skin. "Does he know who I am?"
"He knows your name," Rafael said darkly. "And because he's an idiot who spent six years in a cell, he thinks he hit the jackpot. He’s telling people in the street that you 'stole his family,' and he’s planning to demand a million-dollar payoff to sign away his parental rights to Mia."
Damiano slowly closed his ledger book. A cold, lethal stillness settled over his features.
"Parental rights?" Damiano repeated the words, his voice so quiet it was terrifying. "The man who tried to sell his pregnant wife’s apartment wants to speak about parental rights?"
"He's heading toward the estate right now, Damiano," Rafael warned. "He took a cab from Brooklyn. He’s armed, and he’s high on cheap cocaine. He thinks he can cause a public scene at your front gate."
Damiano stood up, pulling a sleek black leather holster over his broad shoulders.
"Tell the gate guards to open the iron doors when he arrives," Damiano ordered smoothly.
May you like
Rafael blinked. "Open the doors?"
"Let him walk into my courtyard," Damiano whispered, his grey eyes flashing like steel blades. "I want to show Joey Moretti what happens when a ghost tries to claim a live child."
