Chapter 2 - The Reunion in the Dark

Elena gasped, instinctively throwing her body over Julian, using her thin frame as a shield against the doorway.
"Please!" she cried out, her voice filled with absolute terror. "We're sorry! Julian was just crying because he was hungry! We didn't mean to disturb the party!"
"Mommy, I'll be quiet! I promise!" Julian squeaked, burying his face into her waist.
Hearing my own wife and child beg for mercy as if they were abused prisoners tore my soul apart. I dropped the crowbar onto the dirt floor and stepped into the pale light of the single bulb, sinking down to my knees before them.
"Elena," I choked out, my voice thick with unshed tears. "Julian..."
Elena froze. The trembling in her shoulders stopped instantly. She raised her eyes slowly, blinking against the light, staring at my scarred, sun-darkened face, my calloused hands, and the tears spilling down my cheeks.
"Julian...?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Is... is that really you?"
"It's me, my love," I sobbed, reaching out with shaking hands to gently touch her hollow cheek. "I'm home. God help me, I'm home."
Elena let out a ragged, heartbroken cry that had been suppressed for five agonizing years. She threw her arms around my neck, pulling me close with every bit of strength left in her frail body. I wrapped my arms tightly around them both, burying my face in Elena’s shoulder, holding my son against my chest for the very first time in half a decade.
Julian looked up at me with wide, cautious eyes. "Are you... my Daddy?"
"Yes, baby," I wept, kissing his forehead, feeling the heat of his small, feverish skin. "I'm your Daddy. And no one is ever going to hurt you again. Ever."
For ten minutes, we held each other in the cold dirt shed. I listened as Elena, through breathless sobs, revealed the horrifying truth.
The moment I stepped onto the plane to Saudi Arabia five years ago, my mother, Evelyn, and sister, Victoria, had seized control. They intercepted every package, stole every check, and confiscated Elena’s identification papers and phone. They told the neighbors that Elena had abandoned me and run away, while secretly locking her and Julian in the rear property shed.
They forced Elena to clean the mansion, wash their clothes, and tend the garden in complete isolation. If she refused or tried to escape, Victoria threatened to report her to social services as an unfit mother and have Julian taken away forever.
Every single phone call I made from the oil rigs had been carefully staged. Evelyn had answered my calls in her master bedroom while Victoria stood over Elena in the shed with a knife or a threat against Julian, ensuring Elena never made a sound.

"They told me you forgot about us," Elena wept, clutching my jacket. "They said you started a new family over there... but I kept telling Julian you'd come back."
I wiped her tears with my thumb, my jaw set like iron. "I didn't forget you. And tonight, Evelyn and Victoria are going to pay back every single cent... and every single tear."
