Chapter 5 - The First Step of Vengeance

That night, I did not sleep.

I moved Elena and Julian into the master suite on the top floor—the grand room my mother had taken for herself. I personally stripped Evelyn's silk sheets off the bed, threw her expensive clothes out into the hallway, and locked the door from the inside.

I ran a warm bath for my wife and son. For two hours, I sat on the bathroom floor, gently washing five years of dirt and sorrow from Elena’s skin, carefully untangling her hair, and tending to the cuts on her small hands. Julian fell asleep in the warm water, his tiny hand holding onto my thumb as if he were afraid I would disappear if he let go.

After feeding them a hot, fresh meal ordered from an all-night restaurant, I laid them down on the king-sized bed. Elena held my hand tightly, her eyes wide with lingering trauma.

"Are you staying?" she whispered in the dark.

"I'm right here," I replied, kissing her forehead. "I'm never leaving your side again."

While they slept, I sat at the desk in the corner of the room, lighting a single lamp. I pulled out my laptop and dialed a number I had saved years ago—the personal line of Marcus Vance, the most feared forensic accountant and corporate attorney in the state, and a man whose life I had saved during an engineering crisis in Riyadh three years prior.

"Julian?" Marcus’s deep voice answered on the second ring. "It's late. Is everything alright?"

"Marcus," I said, my voice dead calm. "I need you in the city at sunrise. Bring a forensic auditing team, an estate litigation lawyer, and a senior detective from the county police department."

Marcus paused for a second, sensing the gravity in my tone. "Who are we targeting?"

"My mother and my sister," I replied coldly. "They embezzled half a million dollars of my earnings, abused my wife, and held my son in illegal confinement. I want every asset under their names frozen by noon tomorrow. I want every bank account audited, every gift recovered, and every crime documented."

"Consider it done," Marcus said without hesitation. "I'll be at your gates at six in the morning."

At seven sharp the following morning, the front gates of the estate opened to admit three black SUVs. Marcus Vance stepped out, followed by four accountants carrying heavy silver briefcases and two uniformed police officers.

Downstairs in the living room, Evelyn and Victoria were sitting on the sofa, clutching coffee cups, their eyes red from crying all night. They had foolishly believed that after my temper cooled, I would relent. They believed that blood ties would prevent me from taking real action.

They were dead wrong.

"Evelyn Caldwell, Victoria Caldwell," Marcus Vance announced as he walked into the living room, flipping open a legal portfolio. "I am representing Julian Caldwell. As of 6:00 AM today, a temporary restraining order and asset freeze has been issued against both of your personal accounts pending a full forensic audit."

Victoria jumped off the couch, her face contorted in panic. "What?! You can't freeze my accounts! I have car payments! I have shopping bills!"

"Those accounts were funded entirely by wire transfers from Julian’s overseas account under fraudulent pretenses," Marcus explained smoothly. "Furthermore, officers, the crime scene in the rear shed has been fully preserved and photographed."

The senior police officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Evelyn Caldwell, Victoria Caldwell," the officer declared. "You are under investigation for grand larceny, criminal fraud, unlawful restraint, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent."
