Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest

I carried Julian in my left arm, his small head resting exhausted against my neck, while my right hand held Elena’s cold fingers tightly. We walked away from the dark shed, stepping across the manicured green lawn toward the grand rear terrace of the mansion.
Inside the glass-walled dining room, thirty guests were gathered around a massive mahogany table loaded with roasted meats, caviar, and silver buckets of champagne.
At the head of the table sat my mother, Evelyn, adorned in a diamond necklace that had cost twenty thousand dollars, sipping wine while laughing merrily. Next to her sat my sister, Victoria, wearing a designer silk dress, showing off a new sports car key to her wealthy friends.
"To success, family, and luxury!" Victoria declared, raising her crystal flute. The room erupted into cheers.
BANG.
The heavy double glass doors of the terrace were kicked open so violently that the frames rattled against the stone walls. The loud laughter inside died instantly. Thirty wealthy guests turned in shock toward the entrance.
There I stood in the doorway.
My work clothes were covered in oil, grease, and dirt from the road. My hair was unkempt, my eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fury. Beside me stood Elena in her torn rags, and in my arms was my malnourished son.
Evelyn dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, spraying sparkling wine over her silver heels. Her face lost every drop of color, turning as white as a sheet.
"Ju... Julian?" Evelyn stammered, her voice shaking violently as she pushed her chair back.
Victoria gasped, dropping her car keys onto her plate. "Julian?! What... what are you doing here?! You weren't supposed to return until next month!"
"Surprise, Mother," I said, my voice dangerously low, echoing like thunder across the grand dining room. "I finished my contract early. I came home to see how my family was enjoying the house I built."
The guests looked back and forth between me, my pristine mother, and the starved, bruised woman standing at my side. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd like poison.
"Who is that woman?" a wealthy woman near the front asked quietly. "Is that... is that Julian's wife? I thought Evelyn said she ran away five years ago?"
"Julian, sweetie!" Evelyn suddenly shrieked, recovering from her initial shock and adopting a sickly sweet, desperate facade. She rushed forward with her arms outstretched. "Oh, thank God you're safe! Look at you! Why didn't you tell us you were coming?! And why did you bring... them in here?"
She pointed an accusatory, manicured finger at Elena. "She snuck back onto the property again, didn't she?! Julian, get away from her! That woman is unstable! She abandoned you and your son years ago to live a wild life, and now she comes back begging for money!"
Victoria jumped up, nodding furiously. "Yes, Brother! We caught her trespassing in the back yard months ago! Mother took pity on her and gave her shelter in the caretaker's shed out of charity!"
Elena shrank back slightly, but I held her hand firmer, stepping directly between my mother and my wife.

I looked Evelyn straight in her lying eyes and smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that made her take two steps back.
"Is that so, Mother?" I asked softly. "Then explain to me why the padlock on the shed door was locked from the outside?"
