Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

The criminal trial two months later was swift. Facing overwhelming physical, medical, and financial evidence, and realizing that no jury would ever show them mercy, Evelyn and Victoria agreed to a full guilty plea to avoid the maximum sentence of twenty-five years in maximum-security prison.
On the day of sentencing, I stood at the podium in the courtroom to deliver my victim impact statement.
Evelyn looked up at me from the defense table, her eyes filled with desperate, hollow pleading. "Julian... please... I'm your mother," she whispered, her lips trembling.
I looked at her, feeling neither hatred nor affection—only a profound, quiet certainty.
"For five years, I worked under a desert sun that almost broke me," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "I swallowed dust, tore my hands, and gave up five years of watching my son grow up because I believed I was protecting my family. I trusted you with my life's work, Mother. And you tore my real family to pieces for gold and status."
I turned my head to look directly at Victoria. "You traded your nephew's childhood for a sports car and designer dresses. You traded your sister-in-law's dignity for a title in high society."
I turned back to the judge. "Your Honor, they showed no mercy to a five-year-old child crying for food in the dark. I ask that the court show them no mercy today."
Judge Harrison nodded solemnly.
"Evelyn Caldwell," the judge pronounced, "for grand larceny, forgery, and criminal child endangerment, you are sentenced to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years."
Evelyn sobbed loudly, collapsing against her lawyer’s arm.
"Victoria Caldwell," the judge continued, "for conspiracy, grand theft, and unlawful restraint, you are sentenced to twelve years in state prison."
As the guards led them away in chains, their cries fading down the concrete hallway of the courthouse, I felt a heavy, dark weight lift off my shoulders. The parasites had been removed. The justice system had done its work. Now, it was time to rebuild.

The mansion, fully cleared of every trace of my mother's and sister's presence, belonged entirely to Elena, Julian, and me.
