Chapter 2 - The East Wing Sanctuary

The east wing of Villa Moretti was a place reserved exclusively for the inner circle of the bloodline. Its high arched windows looked out over the rolling, mist-shrouded hills of Lombardy, flanked by private gardens, private security checkpoints, and bulletproof reinforced glass that could withstand an anti-tank missile.
By midnight, Emma was fast asleep in a grand mahogany four-poster bed, wrapped in silk sheets, her beloved blue rabbit tucked firmly under her chin. The terrifying events of the afternoon had vanished from her young mind, lulled away by a warm meal and the quiet comfort of the estate's luxurious master guest suite.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a porcelain cup of warm tea, staring out into the dark gardens below. Patrol guards with Belgian Malinois attack dogs moved silently across the illuminated lawns, their shadows stretching against the stone fountains.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door.
Before I could answer, the door opened, and Alessandro stepped into the suite. He had discarded his formal suit jacket and necktie; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the edge of a jagged tattoo stretching across his collarbone. He looked tired, the deep lines around his eyes revealing the immense weight of the empire he commanded.
"She sleeps well," Alessandro said softly, his gaze drifting over to the bed where Emma was breathing softly.
"She doesn't understand what any of this means," I replied, setting my teacup on the marble side table. "She thinks you're a knight who sent the mean lady away."
Alessandro let out a low, dry chuckle that lacked any real humor. "A knight? If the people of this city heard that, they would laugh until they wept. I am many things, Clara, but a knight is certainly not one of them."
He walked over to the small sitting area, sitting down on the leather armchair opposite the window. He gestured for me to sit. I hesitated for a moment before taking the seat opposite him.
"My security team dissected the lining of the rabbit an hour ago," Alessandro began, his tone returning to absolute business. "We pulled the Kevlar thread without damaging the outer cloth. The stitch work contained an alpha-numeric sequence—a private ledger account number registered with an off-shore banking institution in Zurich."
I gripped my hands in my lap. "Julian's work?"
"Julian's insurance policy," Alessandro corrected. "Your husband was far smarter than the men who hired him gave him credit for. When he discovered that Matteo Romano was using the syndicate's shipping channels to traffic illegal arms and launder money for an international cartel, he knew he was a dead man. He couldn't go to the police—the Romano family had three high-ranking police commissioners on their payroll."
"So he hid the proof in Emma's toy," I whispered, tears pricking the corners of my eyes as the truth of Julian's tragic final months finally crystallized. "He knew they would search his office, his car, and his safe-deposit boxes. But they would never search a stuffed animal given to his unborn daughter."
"Precisely," Alessandro said. "Julian hid twenty million euros in that Zurich account, but more importantly, he stored the complete digital registry of every traitor inside the twelve families who took bribes from Matteo Romano."
I looked at him, feeling a sudden surge of terrifying realization. "And now that Vivian knows you have the mark... they know I have the key."
"They have known for a long time that the key existed," Alessandro said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His dark eyes fixed on mine with an unwavering intensity. "Vivian was planted in my life to search for it. My engagement to her was never a matter of romance, Clara. It was a strategic alliance negotiated by the council to maintain peace between Milan and Genoa. But Vivian’s greed made her careless."
"What happens to her now?"
"She is currently being interrogated by my head of security, Marco," Alessandro stated flatly, as if discussing the weather. "By morning, she will yield the names of her contacts within the estate. But that also means the peace between the twelve families is officially broken. A storm is coming to Milan, Clara. A war that has been brewing in the shadows for seven years."
I swallowed hard, fear twisting like a tight knot in my stomach. "We aren't mafia, Alessandro. My daughter and I... we are just ordinary people caught in your world's crossfire. If we are in danger here, let us leave. Hide us somewhere far away—in South America, in Asia..."
Alessandro stood up, stepping toward me until he stood directly over my chair. He reached out, his warm, calloused hand lightly cupping the cheek that Vivian had struck earlier that day. The gentleness of his touch was in stark contrast to the lethal aura he carried.
"There is nowhere on this earth far enough to hide from the men who killed your husband, Clara," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a deep, possessive murmur. "If you leave this villa, they will find you within forty-eight hours. But inside these walls, behind my guns and my men, you are untouchable. I swore an oath to protect the innocent blood spilled by my empire. I failed Julian. I will not fail you."
I stared up at him, my heart fluttering wildly—not just from fear, but from the electric, magnetic pull that radiated from this dangerous man.
"Why do you care so much?" I asked, my voice barely audible. "You didn't know me six months ago. I was just a woman cleaning your floors."
Alessandro’s thumb gently traced my lip, his dark eyes searching my face with an emotion he could no longer entirely mask.
May you like
"I watched you every day, Clara," he confessed quietly. "I watched a woman of grace and dignity scrub marble without ever lowering her head. I watched a mother protect her child with more courage than my bravest soldiers. You were never 'just a housekeeper' to me. And now... you are the heart of this house."
Before I could process his words, the heavy iron alarm bells of the estate began to toll through the night air, their deep, resonant gongs shattering the quiet sanctuary of the east wing.
