Chapter 3 - The Siege of Villa Moretti

The lights inside the master suite flickered once, twice, before plunging the room into absolute darkness. Simultaneously, heavy steel blast shutters slammed down over the floor-to-ceiling windows with a series of deafening, hydraulic thuds.

Emma woke with a terrified gasp, screaming out into the blackness. "Mommy! Mommy!"

I scrambled out of my chair, but before I could take two steps in the dark, Alessandro’s strong arm caught me by the waist, steadying me instantly.

"I have you," he murmured near my ear.

He pulled a small tactical flashlight from his belt, illuminating the room in a bright beam of white light, before drawing a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from his side holster. He strode over to the bed, picking up Emma in one fluid motion with his left arm while keeping his weapon raised with his right.

Emma wrapped her small arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "Mr. Alessandro! The loud noises are back!"

"Shh, little one," Alessandro whispered, patting her back with a surprisingly practiced gentleness. "It's just thunder. I have you. Nothing in this world can hurt you while I'm holding you."

The oak door of the suite burst open. Marco, Alessandro’s head of security, stood in the hallway, clad in full tactical armor, his automatic rifle held at the low ready. Blood dripped from a minor graze on his temple.

"Don Alessandro!" Marco barked, his breath heavy. "It’s a coordinated assault! A convoy of armored SUVs just breached the south gate using heavy explosives! They cut the main power grid and jammed our primary satellite communications!"

"Who is it?" Alessandro demanded, his voice chillingly calm as he stepped into the hallway, keeping me directly behind his back.

"The Romano family," Marco reported grimly. "Vivian’s father, Don Alberto Romano, has mobilized his entire northern militia. They know Vivian was compromised. They are trying to burn the estate before we can access the Zurich account."

"How many?"

"At least fifty men inside the perimeter," Marco said. "Our exterior perimeter guards are engaging them in the gardens, but they brought heavy breaching charges."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. "They brought fifty men to my front door? Alberto has grown bold in his old age."

He turned to look at me. The white flashlight beam caught the fierce, unyielding light in his eyes. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small, silver key on a thin steel chain, and pressed it into my hand.

"Marco," Alessandro ordered, "escort Clara and Emma down the private elevator to the sub-level panic bunker. Lock the titanium doors from the inside. The bunker has an independent air filtration system, satellite communications, and enough provisions for a month. Do not open that door for anyone except me."

"Understood, boss!" Marco nodded.

I grabbed Alessandro’s arm, my fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt. "What about you? You can't go out there against fifty armed men!"

Alessandro looked down at my hand on his arm, then met my eyes. The cold, lethal aura of the Mafia Don seemed to flare around him like an invisible flame, yet his gaze upon me was fiercely protective.

"This is my house, Clara," he said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "No one enters my home, threatens my guests, or frightens your child and walks away breathing. I will meet you downstairs when the lawn is clean."

He gently unclasped my hand from his arm, leaned down, and kissed Emma on her forehead. "Take care of your mommy, Emma."

"I will!" Emma piped up bravely, clutching her blue rabbit against his shoulder before he handed her back into my arms.

Alessandro turned toward Marco. "Get them to the bunker. Now."

Without waiting another second, Alessandro turned on his heel and strode down the grand corridor toward the primary staircase, drawing a second weapon from his belt as the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the lower floor.

Marco guided me down a hidden service corridor concealed behind a mahogany wall panel. We moved quickly through the dark, narrow passages, the distant booms of grenade detonations and shattering glass echoing through the concrete walls.

My heart felt like it was going to burst from my chest. I wasn't just terrified for Emma and myself; I was terrified for the man who had just walked straight into a violent inferno to ensure our survival.

We reached a heavy, vault-like silver door at the end of a long sub-level corridor. Marco swiped a security card, typed a complex eight-digit passcode into an illuminated keypad, and inserted the silver key I had been holding.

With a deep pneumatic hiss, the heavy door unlocked and swung open, revealing a brilliantly lit, ultra-modern bunker filled with leather seating, security monitors, medical supplies, and an entire wall displaying live camera feeds of the estate.

"Get inside, Mrs. Bennett," Marco urged, keeping his rifle trained down the corridor. "Once you cross the threshold, press the red lock button beside the panel. The door will seal automatically."

"Are you staying outside?" I asked, stepping into the bunker with Emma.

"My place is beside Don Moretti," Marco said, a fierce, loyal smile touching his lips. "We have an empire to defend."

Before I could respond, Marco reached out, slapped the interior lock button, and pulled the heavy door shut. The pneumatic locks engaged with a series of heavy, definitive clicks, sealing Emma and me away from the war raging above.

I rushed over to the bank of security monitors on the wall.

The camera feeds showed absolute, terrifying chaos. Explosions lit up the manicured gardens, sending earth and stone flying into the night air. Armored vehicles smashed through the iron gates, spilling armed men in black tactical gear onto the driveways.

But in the center of the grand foyer feed stood Alessandro.

He moved with terrifying, predatory grace, utilizing the marble pillars for cover, firing with precise, lethal accuracy. Beside him, his loyal guards held the line, turning the opulent hall of Villa Moretti into a slaughterhouse for the invading Romano militia.

I sank onto the leather sofa, holding Emma tightly against my chest, my eyes glued to the screen, praying with every fiber of my soul that the man fighting for our lives would survive the night.
