Chapter 7 - The New Dawn

Three months passed.
The onset of winter brought a soft, dusting layer of white snow over the rolling hills of Lombardy, transforming Villa Moretti into a breathtaking winter palace.
Inside the grand dining hall, where twelve crime bosses had once sat in suspicious, icy silence, a massive oak banquet table was now set for a grand celebration. Towering pine trees decorated with golden lights and crystal ornaments stood in every corner, filling the warm air with the rich scent of evergreen and roasted chestnuts.
Tonight was not a syndicate meeting.
It was the annual Milanese Children’s Charity Gala—an initiative established by Clara Bennett to provide funding, housing, and medical care for widowed mothers and orphaned children across northern Italy.
Over three hundred guests filled the room—not just high-ranking legal officials, business leaders, and diplomats, but also reformed members of the local syndicates who had officially transitioned their shipping businesses into legitimate commercial enterprises under Alessandro's strict new regime.
I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the bustling hall, wearing a breathtaking icy blue velvet gown with a diamond necklace resting against my collarbone.
A gentle step sounded behind me.
Alessandro wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling my back flush against his chest, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched the guests below.
"You've transformed this entire city in three months, my love," Alessandro murmured softly near my ear.
"We transformed it together," I replied, covering his hands with mine. "The shipping ports are completely clear of illegal contraband. The local unions are operated by fair wages, and the foundation has already helped over two hundred families this winter."
"Marco tells me Don Ricci’s former lieutenant tried to make a legitimate donation to the foundation yesterday," Alessandro chuckled softly. "He was so nervous he dropped his checkbook twice."
"Good," I smiled, turning in his arms to face him. "He should know that the Moretti family expects absolute excellence in charity now."
Alessandro looked down at me, his eyes filled with an undeniable, fierce pride. "You are an extraordinary woman, Clara. Julian would be proud to know that his sacrifice led to a world where his daughter is safe, and where his widow reigns as the most respected heart in Italy."
Mentioning Julian's name no longer brought a pang of sharp, suffocating grief. It brought a quiet, gentle peace. Julian had died protecting the truth, and that truth had ultimately led me to the man who would protect our child for the rest of his life.
"Speaking of our daughter..." I smirked softly, looking over his shoulder toward the grand staircase.
Emma was currently being escorted down the stairs by Marco, who looked hilariously out of his element in a formal tuxedo while holding a pink sparkling tea cup in one hand and Emma's blue rabbit in the other. Emma was giggling wildly, wearing a tiny matching blue velvet dress, waving to the guests below like a little princess.
"Marco has become her personal bodyguard, butler, and tea-party guest," Alessandro laughed, shaking his head. "My head of security used to strike fear into the hearts of cartels across Europe. Now he carries a wool rabbit and drinks imaginary tea at eight in the morning."
"It suits him," I laughed, pressing my forehead against Alessandro's chest. "It shows he has a heart."
"We all found our hearts because of you, Clara," Alessandro whispered softly.
He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulling out a small, exquisite velvet ring box. He flipped it open to reveal a breathtaking, flawless six-carat sapphire ring framed by intricate diamond lace—a design that mirrored the deep blue color of Emma's rabbit.
My breath caught in my throat.
"Alessandro..." I breathed, looking up into his dark, loving eyes.
"Clara Bennett," Alessandro spoke, his gravelly voice rich with an emotion so deep it vibrated through his chest. "You walked into my life when I was a man living in shadow. You gave me a reason to fight, a reason to live, and a family to treasure above all power and wealth. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my Don, and the eternal Queen of my heart?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my eyelashes as I looked at the magnificent man kneeling before me on the balcony.
May you like
"Yes!" I cried softly, stepping into his arms as he slid the sapphire ring onto my finger. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"
He stood up, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire world outside vanish into pure light and warmth. Below us, the crowd in the grand hall broke into applause as Marco held Emma up to see her mother and the man who had become her true father.
