Chapter 2 - The Buried Call

The air in the garden restaurant went completely still.

Adrian stood up slowly, the blood draining from his face until he looked like a statue carved from salt.

Victoria Vance.

She had been his right hand for seven years. The woman who controlled his schedule, managed his private encrypted phone lines, filtered his mail, and stood guard at the door of his life while he built Vale Global Enterprises into a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut. He had trusted her with his life, his security, his estate.

And she had buried his daughter.

"She told you..." Adrian whispered, his hands curling into white-knuckled fists at his sides. "She told you I was engaged?"

"She sent me a copy of a draft press release," Nora said, pulling a folded, yellowed piece of paper from the inner pocket of her faded coat. Her fingers shook as she held it out. "She said you offered me fifty thousand dollars to sign a non-disclosure agreement and never speak your name again. I threw the money in her face and walked away."

Adrian took the paper.

It was a letter printed on his official corporate letterhead, dated five years ago. It bore his digitized signature at the bottom—a signature Victoria had full authority to use for routine press releases and administrative clearances.

The text was ruthless. It threatened Nora with legal action, accused her of trying to fabricate a paternity claim for financial gain, and warned her that Vale Global’s legal division would tie her up in court until she was bankrupt if she ever stepped foot in New York.

"I never saw this," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and dangerous that even the restaurant manager took a step back. "I swear on my life, Nora... I never saw this."

Before Nora could answer, her eyes rolled back into her head.

Her knees buckled, and her body collapsed forward onto the stone floor.

"Mom!" Kloe shrieked, dropping her fork and scrambling out of the chair.

Adrian moved with lightning speed, catching Nora before her head struck the stone. Her body was terrifyingly light, her skin burning hot despite the cool evening breeze. She was unconscious, her breathing shallow and labored.

"Call an ambulance!" a diner shouted.

"No," Adrian barked, looking up at his head of security, Marcus, who was already rushing over with a satellite phone. "Get the private medical transport from Vale Memorial Hospital here now! Clear the streets! If she isn't in an ICU in ten minutes, everyone on that transport team is fired!"

Marcus didn't hesitate; he began barking orders into his headset.

Adrian scooped Nora effortlessly into his arms, holding her close against his chest. He looked down at Kloe, who was sobbing, clutching her small stuffed rabbit and tugging on his jacket.

"Dad... is Mom going to die?" Kloe sobbed.

Adrian knelt down, balancing Nora securely in his left arm, and extended his right hand to the little girl.

"No, Kloe," Adrian said, his voice absolute, filled with the terrifying resolve of a man who had suddenly found his purpose. "Nobody is dying. Not while I am breathing. Hold my hand."

Kloe reached out and wrapped her small, warm fingers around his. Together, they walked out of the garden, leaving his untouched fortune behind to fight for the life he had lost.
