Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

While life at the estate became a paradise of healing, the business world was in turmoil.
Victoria Vance’s arrest had sent shockwaves through Wall Street. A small faction of board members at Vale Global—led by a ruthless corporate rival named Richard Sterling—attempted to use the scandal to launch a hostile takeover, claiming Adrian’s personal life was distracting him from his fiduciary duties.
On a rainy Thursday morning, Adrian sat in his private home study, reviewing legal briefs with Arthur Vance and Marcus.
"Richard Sterling has accumulated eight percent of Vale Global’s floating shares," Arthur reported grimly. "He has called for an emergency shareholder vote next Monday to remove you as Chief Executive Officer, citing reputational damage from the Victoria Vance embezzlement scandal."
Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of dark mineral water, his face completely unbothered.
"Sterling thinks I'm weak because I spent two weeks in a hospital instead of fighting him on the trading floor," Adrian said quietly, his voice laced with dangerous authority.
"He's running a smear campaign in the financial press, Boss," Marcus added. "He's hinting that you paid off Nora Ellis to cover up an illegitimate scandal."
The temperature in the study plummeted to absolute zero.
Adrian set his glass down on the mahogany desk with a sharp, heavy click.
"He mentioned Nora?" Adrian asked softly.
"In an off-the-record briefing with Bloomberg news this morning," Marcus confirmed.
Adrian stood up, buttoning his jacket. "Call a full press conference for two o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Vale Global Headquarters in Manhattan. Invite every major news outlet, financial reporter, and shareholder."

Arthur frowned slightly. "Adrian, what are you planning to do? The PR team advises we issue a quiet written statement regarding Victoria’s fraud."
"I don't care what the PR team advises," Adrian said, walking toward the study window and looking out at the rain over the ocean. "Richard Sterling wants to make my family a public issue to steal my company. Tomorrow, I will show him what happens when you touch a man's family."
