Chapter 5 - The First Morning

The golden rays of a fresh autumn sun broke over the New York skyline, painting the penthouse suite of Vale Memorial Hospital in soft shades of orange and warm amber.
Adrian sat in a comfortable armchair beside the ICU bed, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of Nora’s chest. The oxygen mask had been replaced with a light nasal cannula, and color was slowly returning to her cheeks.
In the small adjoining room, Kloe was still fast asleep under a soft cashmere blanket, guarding her little rabbit.
The quiet beep of the heart monitor sped up slightly.
Nora’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a long, soft breath and slowly opened her eyes, squinting against the soft morning light.
Adrian was at her side instantly, gently taking her hand into his broad, warm palms.
"Nora," he whispered softly. "Don't try to sit up. You're safe. You're at the hospital."
Nora stared at him, her vision clearing. She looked at the luxurious room, the high-tech medical monitors, the vase of fresh white lilies sitting on the table, and then down at her hand wrapped in his.
"Kloe..." she rasped, her voice dry and weak.
"She's right through that door," Adrian assured her instantly, pointing toward the adjoining room. "She ate a warm meal, had a bath, and she's sleeping like an angel. She’s safe, Nora. I promise you."
Nora’s eyes filled with tears, a long, shaky breath escaping her lips. "I thought... I thought I was going to lose her last night, Adrian. I didn't have enough money for the rent. The landlord changed the locks yesterday morning... we had nowhere to go."
Adrian felt a sharp, agonizing stab in his chest. While he was sitting in his seventy-million-dollar penthouse choosing between mahogany and marble finishes, the woman he had loved was being locked out of her home with his child in the rain.
"You will never have to worry about rent, money, or shelter ever again, Nora," Adrian said, holding her hand against his cheek. "Victoria Vance is in jail. She was arrested last night. The lies she told you... the letters she sent... I cleared it all away. I know the truth now."
Nora looked deeply into his dark eyes, searching for the boy she had known seven years ago beneath the expensive suit and the formidable billionaire persona.
"Why didn't you look for me yourself, Adrian?" she asked, her voice small, a single tear escaping her eye and rolling onto her pillow. "When you didn't call... why didn't you just come back to the diner in Queens?"
"I did," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable regret. "Six months after I moved to Manhattan, I finally had enough money to buy our first house. I drove back to Queens with a key in my pocket. But the diner was torn down, your apartment building was empty, and the neighbor told me you had moved away with a new husband."
Nora blinked in shock. "A new husband? I never married anyone!"
"Victoria paid off the building manager to lie to me if I ever returned," Adrian said bitterly. "She created a fake paper trail showing you had moved to California. I spent five years believing you had moved on, that you hated me for leaving, and that you wanted nothing to do with my life."
Nora closed her eyes, letting out a soft sob as five years of built-up pain, misunderstanding, and loneliness dissolved into the warm morning air.

"We were both fools, Adrian," she whispered. "We let the world stand between us."
"Never again," Adrian vowed, leaning down and pressing a tender, gentle kiss against her forehead. "I swear to you, Nora... never again."
