Chapter 15 - The Counter-Strike

Arthur Vance arrived at the Malibu estate before dawn, stepping out of a chartered helicopter that touched down on the green lawn as the first streaks of pink and gold broke across the Pacific horizon.
Carrying a heavy leather briefcase stuffed with international financial filings, Arthur walked briskly onto the terrace where Vincent, Clare, and Dominic were waiting with steaming cups of black coffee.
“When you call me at two in the morning talking about a Swiss syndicate trying to extort a retired mob boss and his wife, I assume it’s either a bad thriller novel or an expensive reality,” Arthur said, dropping his briefcase onto the terrace table and popping the brass latches. “Judging by the coffee and the security detail, it’s neither.”
“It’s very real, Arthur,” Clare said, sliding the cream-colored envelope and the Aegis Trust charter across the table. “Dmitri Sokolov flew in from Geneva yesterday to deliver this ultimatum. Sign away Lucia’s residual trust, or face global litigation and media exposure.”
Arthur pulled out a pair of half-moon reading glasses, sat down at the table, and began scanning the documents with the razor-sharp intensity of a master forensic accountant. For ten long minutes, the only sound on the terrace was the rustle of heavy paper and the distant crashing of the waves.
Finally, Arthur looked up over the rims of his glasses, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face.
“Well,” Arthur chuckled softly. “Dmitri is even more arrogant and desperate than I thought.”
Vincent leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “Explain.”
“He threatened you with international litigation and media leaks because he assumes you’re afraid of the spotlight,” Arthur tapped a finger against the document. “What Dmitri doesn't know—because he’s been hiding in a Swiss bunker for the past year—is that the Aegis Trust was already flagged by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission three months ago under new international anti-money-laundering treaties.”
Dominic raised an eyebrow. “In English, Arthur?”
“In English, the moment Dmitri brought these physical documents across US borders and tried to force an extortionate signature from a US citizen under threat of coercion, he committed a federal felony on American soil,” Arthur declared triumphantly. “Not only that, but by presenting this charter, he officially linked his own name and personal Geneva banking coordinates to the trust’s active portfolio.”
Vincent’s dark eyes flashed with dangerous satisfaction. “He walked right into a trap of his own making.”
“Precisely,” Arthur nodded, pulling a stack of pre-drafted federal motions from his briefcase. “Here is our counter-strike. We don't sign their release. Instead, we file an emergency injunction in Federal District Court invoking the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, coupled with an international asset-freeze request submitted directly to Interpol through the Attorney General’s office.”
Clare smiled, feeling the last remaining tension leave her shoulders. “And Dmitri?”
“Dmitri thinks he’s delivering an ultimatum in Malibu,” Arthur smiled grimly. “By noon today, when he tries to check out of his Beverly Hills hotel, federal marshals will be waiting in the lobby to serve him with a grand jury subpoena and a warrant for international extortion.”

Vincent stood up, looking out over the golden expanse of the Pacific Ocean as the sun fully crested the horizon.
“Let’s close the trap,” Vincent said quietly.
