Chapter 19 - The Final Stand

Upstairs in the master suite, Vincent Marino’s eyes flew open instantly.

Years in the underworld had trained his instincts to react to the slightest shift in the atmosphere. The heavy silence of the house wasn't peaceful; it was the suffocating silence of an ambush.

Beside him in the king-sized bed, Clare stirred sleepily, rolling over. “Vincent? What is it?”

“Stay in bed,” Vincent whispered, his voice like cold steel. He slipped out from under the covers in one fluid motion, pulling a specialized, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from the biometric safe hidden inside the bedside table.

Clare sat up immediately, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't panic. The fear of the past had long since been replaced by fierce maternal instinct. “Maddie.”

“I’ve got her,” Vincent said, moving silently toward the door connecting to the children’s room.

As he pulled the door open, the hallway outside was pitch black. The smart-home lighting system was completely dead.

Through the faint moonlight streaming in from the hallway windows, Vincent spotted the first tactical operative moving silently up the grand staircase, rifle raised.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired two suppressed shots with lethal precision.

Puff. Puff.

The operative collapsed backward down the stairs, tumbling into the darkness below.

“Intruders! In the house!” Vincent shouted back into the bedroom, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Clare, get the panic room reinforced! Now!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Clare’s voice rang out fiercely. She had already scooped little Maddie from her bed, wrapping the sleeping child tightly in a heavy blanket.

Footsteps echoed frantically from both ends of the hallway. They were surrounded.

“Vincent! To me!” Dominic’s voice roared from the bottom of the stairs, slightly slurred from the taser shock but fighting through the pain. Automated emergency backup generators kicked in overhead, flooding the hallways with harsh amber emergency lighting.

Two more tactical operatives lunged around the corner from the east wing, weapons raised.

Vincent shielded Clare and Maddie with his own body, raising his weapon to return fire, when suddenly a deafening roar echoed from the foyer below.

Dominic, bleeding from his shoulder but wielding a 12-gauge tactical shotgun, unleashed a devastating blast that blew the front operatives off their feet, sending them crashing against the marble pillars.

“Boss! The back stairwell is clear! Move, move, move!” Dominic yelled over the blaring alarms.

Vincent grabbed Clare’s hand, sprinting down the private back corridor toward the reinforced subterranean safe room. Every muscle in his body burned with a singular, primal purpose: protect his family at any cost.

They reached the heavy steel vault door of the safe room. Vincent punched the six-digit biometric code into the keypad with lightning speed, the heavy steel mechanism grinding open with a reassuring hiss.

“Get inside,” Vincent commanded, pushing Clare and a still-sleeping Maddie into the reinforced sanctuary.

“Vincent, come with us!” Clare pleaded, her eyes wide with terror and fierce love.

“I have to clear the house,” Vincent said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding devotion. “I started this war a long time ago, Clare. Tonight, I end it.”

Before she could pull him back, Vincent slammed the heavy vault door shut, locking it from the outside just as heavy boots thudded down the hallway toward him.

Vincent turned around, raising his pistol in the harsh amber light, ready to face whatever shadows came out of his past to destroy his future.
