Chapter 17 - Shadows on the Horizon

The arrest of Dmitri Sokolov sent shockwaves through the dark underbelly of the European syndicates. Within seventy-two hours, the entire network of shell corporations associated with the Aegis Trust collapsed under a barrage of coordinated international audits led by Interpol and the US Justice Department.
For the first time in decades, the global shadow economy was completely cut off from the residual Marino-Sokolov capital.
And yet, in a world where enemies were forged in blood and betrayal, not everyone accepted defeat lying down.
Deep in the secluded foothills outside Zurich, inside a dimly lit oak-paneled study lined with leather-bound books and private surveillance monitors, a man sat swirling a glass of aged Scotch.
His name was Nikolas Thorne—the estranged younger brother of the late Victor Thorne, who had been locked away during the Chicago trials. While Victor had been the brute force of the syndicate, Nikolas was the shadow—a brilliant, sociopathic cyber-strategist who had operated in total anonymity across Eastern Europe for over a decade.
On the massive wall-mounted monitors in front of him flickered live, unauthorized drone feeds of the Malibu estate.
He watched Vincent walking along the green lawn with little Maddie, laughing as the golden retriever puppies chased her sandals. He watched Clare sitting on the terrace reading a book, bathed in the golden California sun.
Nikolas took a slow sip of his Scotch, a cold, venomous smile spreading across his pale face.
“They think they won,” Nikolas muttered softly to the empty room. “They think arresting Dmitri and freezing some Swiss accounts ends the game.”
He tapped a key on his encrypted console, pulling up a secondary file—a confidential, classified dossier containing every single medical record, security route, daily routine, and personal vulnerability of the Marino-Vance household.
“Vincent wants a peaceful life with his little family,” Nikolas whispered, his eyes glowing with dangerous malice in the screen light. “Let’s see how peaceful it is when the very foundation beneath their feet starts to burn.”

He picked up a secure satellite phone, dialing a direct, encrypted frequency that connected straight to a sleeper cell operating secretly inside the United States.
“This is Ghost-One,” Nikolas said into the receiver. “The target in Malibu is locked. Initiate Phase Two.”
