Chapter 16 - The Beverly Hills Trap

The lobby of the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills was a monument to luxury—marvellous marble pillars, cascading crystal chandeliers, and wealthy international travelers sipping espresso while surrounded by discreet security.

Dmitri Sokolov sat at a corner table in the lounge, wearing a crisp linen blazer, casually swirling a glass of sparkling water as he checked his Rolex. Forty-eight hours had passed since his visit to the Malibu estate, and he was fully expecting a nervous call from Vincent Marino’s legal team conceding to the Geneva syndicate’s demands.

Instead, at exactly 11:45 AM, four men in tailored dark suits walked through the revolving glass doors of the hotel lobby.

They weren't hotel security. They walked with the precise, practiced authority of federal marshals, flanked by two armed local detectives.

Dmitri’s eyes narrowed. He casually reached into his inner breast pocket, his fingers brushing against his burner phone, preparing to slip out through the rear kitchen exit.

“Dmitri Sokolov?”

A deep, commanding voice stopped him in his tracks.

Dmitri looked up to find Detective Sergeant Marcus Cole standing directly beside his table, holding an open federal badge and a thick manila folder. Behind Cole stood two federal agents blocking the lounge’s exits.

Dmitri forced a smooth, diplomatic smile onto his face, leaning back in his chair. “There must be some mistake, officer. I am a registered Swiss diplomat traveling on business.”

“You’re a registered fugitive traveling on expired corporate immunity and active federal warrants for international extortion and wire fraud,” Marcus Cole replied smoothly, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs onto Dmitri’s wrists with practiced efficiency before the syndicate leader could even blink.

“This is an outrage! I demand to speak to the Swiss consulate!” Dmitri hissed, thrashing indignantly as he was hauled up out of his chair, drawing stunned gasps from the wealthy tourists sipping coffee nearby.

“You can speak to whoever you want once we get down to the federal detention center,” Marcus said, turning him firmly toward the exit. “Tell Viktor’s ghost I said hello.”

As Dmitri was marched out of the luxury hotel and into the blinding California sun, flashbulbs from a pre-positioned press team hired by Arthur Vance’s office captured every single second.

By evening, the headlines across major financial and legal news outlets blared: “INTERNATIONAL EXTORTION RING SMASHED IN BEVERLY HILLS: Swiss Syndicate Operative Arrested Following Attempted Shakedown of Retired Executive Vincent Marino.”

Back at the Malibu estate, Vincent sat on the terrace watching the evening news report on a flat-screen tablet while Clare poured two fresh glasses of sparkling cider.

“Well,” Vincent smiled, pulling Clare down into his lap as the news anchor detailed the freezing of the Aegis Trust accounts by Interpol. “It looks like our visitor from Geneva won't be enjoying Swiss chocolate for a very long time.”

Clare rested her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. “The past tried to find us, Vincent. But it found a wall it couldn't break.”

“Because we built it together,” Vincent whispered, kissing her lips as the ocean breeze whispered through the evening lawn.
