Chapter 6 - The Infiltration of the Port

Three weeks passed.
The tension in the city reached a boiling point.
The Moretti family, desperate to regain control after their legal plot collapsed, began attacking Caruso shipping routes along the coast. Three cargo trucks had been intercepted near the docks, and two warehouses had been set on fire.
Vincent worked eighteen hours a day, managing the conflict with cold, surgical precision.
Yet, every night at 8:00 p.m., no matter how intense the legal or street battles were, Vincent returned to the 40th floor.
He shared simple dinners with Clare and Maddie in their suite.
For Clare, those dinners became the center of her life. She saw a side of Vincent Caruso that no one else in the world knew existed.
She saw the man who sat on the rug playing board games with Maddie.
She saw the man who listened intently as Clare talked about her dream of opening a small bakery near the coast.
She saw a deeply lonely, honorable man who had been forced to carry the weight of a violent kingdom because he had no one he could truly trust.
And Vincent, for the first time in his life, found peace.
One rainy Friday evening, Maddie was asleep in her bedroom.
Vincent and Clare sat on the terrace sofa, watching the rain fall over the city lights, sharing a bottle of red wine.
“You’re tired, Vincent,” Clare said softly, looking at the faint gray hair appearing near his temples.
“It’s a long war, Clare,” Vincent said softly, leaning his head back against the cushion.
“Why don't you leave it?” Clare asked, her voice filled with genuine concern. “You have enough money. You could walk away, go anywhere in the world... live a quiet life.”
Vincent looked at her, his dark eyes reflecting the warm terrace lights.
“I tried to leave it once, five years ago,” Vincent murmured. “In my world, Clare, when a king steps down, his enemies don't let him retire. They hunt down everyone he ever cared about to make sure he never comes back.”
He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering Clare’s small hand on the cushion.
“Before I met you and Maddie,” Vincent whispered, “I stayed in this war because I had nothing else to protect. Now... I stay in this war to make sure the world is safe enough for you two to live in peace.”
Clare’s heart pounded in her chest. She looked into his eyes and saw no mob boss, no criminal titan—only a man who loved her with a quiet, fierce, unshakeable devotion.
She leaned in, her lips touching his gently.
The kiss was slow, warm, and deep—a quiet promise spoken in the middle of a gathering storm.
Suddenly, the encrypted phone on the table chimed violently with a high-priority red alert.
Vincent pulled back, grabbing the phone.
Dominic’s panicked voice came through the speaker:
“Boss! We have a breach at Port Terminal 4! The Moretti family hit the main vault where the trust documents are stored! And... boss... they took Arthur Pendelton!”

Vincent stood up instantly, his face turning back into stone.
“Stay inside the suite, Clare,” Vincent commanded, pulling his coat from the chair. “The endgame has begun.”
